Overview

The end-is-near doomsayers are here disputed.
The historical Jesus would have strongly disagreed with the new apocalyptic mood of many current writers. In seven vivid New Testament studies, Dr. Jewett demonstrates what Jesus really had to say about the end of the world as we know it. He shows how unexpectedly different Jesus’ message was from common hopes, and how opposed it is to the teaching of modern sensationalists who speak of “the Rapture” as about to usher in a new dispensation.
This book is for every reader who is puzzled by the great popularity of books about the end times – among both laity and the leaders of the churches. Through the use of contemporary literature and illustration, Dr. Jewett reveals how Jesus’ teaching can affect our lives. He says, “I am convinced that if we would get Jesus’ message straight, we would conclude that the future is still open and that there is a great deal we can do, because it is not Satan, but God who is alive and well on planet Earth.”

Editorial Reviews

R. C. Briggs
Religion in Life (R. C. Briggs, vol 49, Spring 1980 p.112-13)
The author compares the claims of the modern apocalypticists with Jesus’ perspective and arrives at a startling conclusion: Their assumptions and pronouncements contradict Jesus’ point of view and assumptions! . . . . The fatalistic determinism which characterizes the apocalyptic mentality stands in stark contrast with Jesus’ call for openness and responsibility in history. . . . We are indebted to him
Virgil Howard
Jewett’s illustrations are helpful and vivid. The book should be a great help to pastors and lay persons who feel overwhelmed by the flood of literature and sermons on the imminent end of the world and are searching for ways to talk about more adequate interpretations of the biblical message.
D. Granskou
Jesus Against the Rapture would make an excellent text for a church study group willing to explore biblical texts and contemporary issues. This recommendation comes from a reviewer who wondered why he should read a book on rapture -and then could not put it down.
