Overview

Devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child's heart.

Based on her original Jesus
Calling
, this version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives.

After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down what she believed He was saying to her through Scripture.Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her devotionals. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling.
It is Sarah’s fervent prayer that our Savior may bless readers, and now young readers, with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure.

Meets national education standards.

Like a chat in an elevator with Jesus - great book!

This isn't any devotional you have ever read to, or with your children. Each day's entry is like a moment alone with Jesus. Jesus is talking, calling, to each one of us.

Imagine yourself stepping in to the elevator at the library, and right after you get turned around and settled into your best "elevator holding position", Jesus steps in. He immediately senses and recognizes your need at the moment - likely before you even know it's there. And then He speaks. Only for the ride that sends you up one or two floors, but it's enough.

Enough to make you think. And smile. Maybe even breath sigh of relief.

And then the door opens. Begin the gentleman he is, he moves asides for you to exit first. But before you make it out of the box completely, he hands you a note with a smile. The note simple contains a couple references where you can learn more about what he just shared with you.

That's what this book is like.
The book isn't some cheaply bound book, but a very sturdy hardback-with a satin ribbon, as a bonus! With four kids in the house, having paperbacks in the house is inviting disaster!
I really like how the book looks, as well as how it feels. Nothing turns me off faster than bold, crazy illustrations. To me, that is saying that the book is simple gaudy entertainment, or in the spirit of Charlotte Mason: twaddle. As you can see from the cover, it is a simple, just-enough sort of illustration that doesn't scream "Kiddie-book" to your 'tweens, but doesn't yell "Boring!" to your 7 and under crew. I LOVE this about the book. I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but......this book is just like the cover -- simple and just enough.
these daily devo's are short and to the point. I, again, play the four-kids-in-the-house card. If a devotional is going to go on and on and on (like my blog posts tend to do. ahem.), it really doesn't matter how well-written and deep it is - my lower set (and maybe even my oldest) will drop out.

Key features that this mama loves

    1) Bible verse right from the get-go of each daily devo page. It IS about God, you know.

    2) Additional Scripture passages to read following the short devotional. We have gone to these almost every time. It gives us all more to chew on, depth in the conversation, more to ask about. From a homeschool standpoint, my oldest (who is 10.5) can read these passages on her own, or out loud and then narrate in some form. If I wanted her to. :)

    3) Did I mention short and sweet? No fluff, just good stuff.

    4) The bookmark. You got me. I'm a sucker for a built in place-saver.
I think the only thing that I found to be anything less than stellar was that I had to preface the book, and follow up, with a statement that Jesus didn't actually write THIS book, but that Ms. Young spent time in her Bible and collected these Scriptures for us to read, in Jesus' voice. It has taken some convincing, and I don't think a couple of my children believe me. This is all well and good, because the point that they DO hear Jesus' words.

Sense his love pouring up over the symbols on the page.

Hear his love sliding over the satin ribbon.

Desire to act on that love.

    Stan

I actually believe that this so called "children's" version reads better than the adult book. My wife and I read both daily. Thanks to Sarah Young for sharing this with us.

    Wonderful For ALL AGES!

I read the sample and absolutely fell in love with this touching, down to earth devotional. It is titled for kiddo's and I got it for my 12 yr old son, as he transitions into his teens, but I get just as much out of it! What an AWESOME devotional for all! (FYI.... there is also an adult version!)

    Great for kids and parents!!

My 10-year old daughter and I read this book every night. While the messages are easy for her to grasp and grab her attention, they also give us both something to think about and spur on a good discussion. The words are comforting and encouraging. I get as much out of this book as she does!!

    Quiet Time With Grandkids

I have three young grandsons whom I have the priviledge of spending time with. I have loved using Jesus Calling by Sarah Young as a launch to talk about the Lord with them. Each day a new passage is written and full of the Word to speak over their lives. The devotions are easy to read and are sensible even for younger children. It is also appealing to the eye which can be very important to children. I would recommend this devotional for any young family with children or grandchildren. I received this book from Booksneeze to review in their blogging program. I was not expected to give a positive review.

    Great Read!

This brightly colored devotional is titled for "kids" and is written as if Jesus were speaking directly to the reader. In general this book is for the age ranges of 8-12, but I have been reading this to my 3 year old for our nightly devotion time together and it's been something we both look forward to reading. Each daily devotion begins with a bible verse and then moves forward into daily devotions as if Jesus is speaking directly to you. I really liked that the end of each devotion offered a "Read on your own" section with 2 to 3 more Bible verses for the reader to discover on their own. I would truly recommend this book to anyone as a gift for a tweenager or as a devotion to start your little ones on their way to storing the treasures of God's word into their hearts.

The book is beautifully designed - the cover is bright, cheery and inviting and the pages inside bring color to the eye as well as hope to the heart.
