Midwest Book Review
Deftly compiled by international lawyer and theologian Isabella D. 'Apart from Christ we know neither what our life nor death is; we do not know what God is nor what we ourselves are.' Blaise Pascal (1623-1662).

Anderson has done impressive research into Jewish history and has a firm grasp of the sociopolitical climate of Jesus’ time.

Jesus: An Intimate Portrait is a work of explosive magnitude that mediates between the greatest story ever written and the reader's quest for understanding that story. It makes the account real, personal, and vivid to the reader. By fictionalizing the possible thoughts of the Biblical figures, it brings the people to life, presenting them more realistically, more human, and with greater interaction....It is truly a wondrous effort and a lasting experience for anyone who reads it. Bravo, for your insight, research, and courage.

I often shy away from biographies written by Bible scholars. Why? Because I am afraid either that they will be boring or that I won't understand the technical discussion. Anderson's book is neither dull nor too technical. I was captivated from the first page, and the book led me back to my Bible numerous times for additional clarification and confirmation. I think the mark of a good Bible-based book is that it does not replace the Bible, but leads you to it. This biography is written in layman's terms, without being over-simplified. Basic lessons are clearly presented.

Whether you are a new Christian, a longtime believer, or are simply interested and seeking information, Jesus: An Intimate Portrait Of The Man, His Land, And His People is a biography that will enrich and enlighten.

Readers will appreciate the simplicity and the depth of this rich perspective on Jesus' life.
Minneapolis Star Tribune
The book will help Christians develop a deeper understanding of the gospels. But it's also a useful tool for anyone wanting a basic historical understanding of the life of Jesus without an obvious theological viewpoint.
Rambles: A Cultural Arts Magazine
Leith Anderson has taken the challenge to retell the story in Jesus: An Intimate Portrait of the Man, His Land & His People, and he has succeeded marvelously. His knowledge of the era in question blends with his very obvious commitment to the man and his story to produce a tour de force of over 350 pages of facts, insights and entertaining reading....

The primary strength of the book is the narrative. The language is simple but never simplistic. It respects the intelligence of the reader but is not afraid to elucidate points or concepts that could be unknown even to educated readers.

This is a wonderful book in the literal sense that it is filled with wonders.

A neat little book to set on your nightstand, coffee table, or reference shelf 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus is alive with interesting and devotional material. Divided into nine sections, the quotes look at many facets of our Lord. Between Phillips Brooks 'Jesus Christ, the condescension of divinity, and the exaltation of humanity.' (9) to A. W. Tozer's "Promoting self under the guise of promoting Christ is currently so common as to excite little notice." (177) you'll bathe your mind in 208 pages of confronting excerpts. To make this book easier to use, the compiler has closed with a Guide to Themes, an Index of Sources, and a bibliography.

Just to whet your interest, here are a few more quotes. Mother Teresa, 'Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus.' (56) Antony of Padua, 'Christ is the dazzling bright sun who covered himself with a cloud in order to be seen." (125) St. Augustine, 'Christ is the best husband.' (128) Harvey Cox, 'There has never been a better raconteur than Jesus of Nazareth.' (137) Joni Eareckson Tada, 'No other religion or philosophy promises glorified bodies, hearts and minds. Only in the Gospel of Jesus Christ do hurting people find such incredible hope.' (165) There are a myriad sources, including: George MacDonald, Eleanor Roosevelt, Luis Palau, Ulrich Zwingli, Calvin Miller, Christina Rossetti, and Paul Bunyon.

The compiler, Dr. Isabella Bunn, is an interesting person - international lawyer, theologian, Christian social ethics specialist, a college associate director. Bunn's vast library has provided many of the citations in 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus.
