Now available as a board book, Warnes's interpretation of the popular hymn racks up big points for its beguiling watercolors of a friendly bear family whose straightforward piety is rooted in the affection among parents and child. Young audiences will gravitate to the cozy scenes: a parent encircles the cub in his arms to read in bed from "My First Bible," the bears dye Easter eggs ("as He loved so long ago"), garden, make gingerbread bears and roast marshmallows, among many enviable activities that frequently show them in tune with the natural world. Rounded corners and padded covers make this volume extra-safe; gilt edging cues in kids to its special contents. Ages 2-5. (Jan.)

Children's Literature
Children will enjoy this classic hymn illustrated with a whimsical, loving bear family. The father, mother, and little bear share gardening, fishing, and picnicking. Father bear toasts marshmallows over a fire as little bear sits in mother's lap. Surprisingly, father bear can play the violin with his right and left hands. Little bear gathers eggs, paints them, and gives them to friendly bunnies, mice, and other small animals. He bakes cookies with mother bear and shares one with father. Pictures show that little bear is well loved and secure. The bears sing the words of the song as shown by cartoon bubbles over their heads. Young children will learn the words as the book is read again and again. Music for piano with markings for the guitar is found at the end. 2006, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division, Ages 2 to 6.

K-Gr 2-Warnes has illustrated this beloved children's hymn with heartwarming depictions of three bears enjoying a variety of activities in their idyllic forest home. The pictures make it evident that the big, shaggy parents dote on their adorable cub. Together, they work in the garden, tend to the chickens, and go fishing. The father bear reads Bible stories to his child at bedtime, and mother bakes cookies with the tyke. The bears also color eggs to share with the other woodland creatures. Lines from the song are incorporated a few at a time into the spreads, appearing sometimes as dialogue balloons. The pictures, which are rendered in acrylic, water-soluble crayons, and ink, are suffused with the gentle light of a spring morning. The soothing greens and blues of the forest scenes and the warm tones of the bears' snug home reinforce the reassuring message of the lyrics. The pictures tell a story of a loving and reverent family, and children will identify with the friendly characters. The musical score is included at the end of this delightful, finely illustrated work.-Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The words to this traditional children's hymn serve as the text for a pleasant interpretation focusing on a family of three bears: a father, mother and child. The storyline begins with the father bear reading a children's Bible with the little bear and continues throughout the family's day as they garden, fish, bake and decorate Easter eggs. On several spreads the bears are shown hiking and singing the words of the song together, indicated by speech balloons. The general theme of love and caring for others is always apparent even on those pages where the words of the song aren't directly related to the bears' activities. Warnes provides engaging illustrations of the smiling bear family, with expressive faces and charming details such as a fiddle and a fishing hat for the father and a stuffed bunny for the child instead of a teddy bear. This reassuring version of a beloved Sunday-School standard provides an introductory context to the song for very young children, who will enjoy the cozy world of this anthropomorphic bear family. Music and guitar chords are included. (Picture book. 1-5)
