Not all of the words attributed to Jesus were actually spoken by him, nor did he teach all of the doctrines taught as part of the Christian tradition. The canonical gospels mix fact and fiction, and many of Jesus' sayings were lost for 2,000 years. So what did Jesus, or Yeshua, as he was known to his followers, really teach? Recent archaeological work has uncovered ancient texts that shed astonishing new light on the teachings of Jesus; moreover, modern scholarship has revealed the source material for the New Testament gospels. Here, journalist Rex Weyler presents an accessible overview of these important new finds, using recent discoveries to give a fresh view of Jesus’ sayings and message. Weyler approaches this controversial subject with an open, objective, and thoughtful mind, offering a book that entertains, enlightens, and inspires seekers from all spiritual traditions.

Library Journal

Weyler has impeccable credentials for spiritual readers: coauthor of Chop Wood, Carry Water and author of Blood of the Land and Greenpeace: The Inside Story, he is also cofounder of Greenpeace International. In The Jesus Sayings, Weyler is wonderfully effective at coming to terms, for the well-informed common reader, with the historically likely realities of Jesus, taking into account not only orthodox Christian resources but so-called apocryphal sources, historical criticism, and recent archaeology. The result is not a "Greenpeace Jesus" but a complex and historically more satisfying figure. For most collections.

Excellent, attempts to strip back the all layers of ritual, hearsay, misinterpretation, misrepresentation, etc. of Jesus' message, to get to his essential message or original sayings. In particular via ancient texts and what is generally known about that era. Found the book to be extremely insightful in helping to understand what the 'true' Jesus may have lived like and said, who were his followers and their possible fate, and reasons for the subsequent mythicizing and distortion of his message, whether they were due to struggles to control his legacy to translation errors or the conversion of new followers.
