Overview

Their future is as wide open as the Montana sky

Juliana Brady is alone in an 1890s Montana mining town, with few prospects for making a living. But she is determined not to be dependent on the charity of others.

Josh McBride is trying to scrape up a living from his sheep herd while he builds his ranch. But when he discovers some rare stones on his property, he's tempted by the prospect of fast money.

When their paths cross, Juliana and Josh must make a choice--the world's riches and promises, or the eternal value of love.

"Maggie Brendan is adept at weaving a sweet love story, and The Jewel of His Heart showcases her penchant for capturing the Old West in authentic dialogue, in vivid descriptions, and in the struggle of two hearts destined to become one. Within these pages indeed lies a jewel."--Tamera Alexander, bestselling author of From a Distance, Beyond This Moment, and The Inheritance

"With its tender love story and vivid imagery of a time gone by, Maggie Brendan's gentle style of prairie romance is reminiscent of Janette Oke, capturing the heart of both the Old West and the reader with romance that will make you sigh."--Julie Lessman, author of the Daughters of Boston series

Maggie Brendan is a member of the American Christian Writers and the American Fiction Writers Association. She is the author of No Place for a Lady and lives in Georgia.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Brendan's second Western romance (after No Place for a Lady) is set in 1890s Montana. Sheepherder Josh McBride moved away from his home to escape his cattle baron father and to forget the woman who broke his heart. He may have found his perfect match in Juliana, but when he considers becoming a miner, it may prove too much for her. VERDICT In the tradition of Lori Wick, this formulaic but charming entry will find a following with those who enjoy gentle romance with a Western twist.

    Sweet romance for anyone

One thing I enjoyed about Maggie Brendan's first book (No Place for a Lady) was that I could share it with the teenage girls in my group at church, their moms, or even my own mom -- and they would all enjoy it. The same is true for Jewel of His Heart.

Brendan's stories might not be as intense as some others and there aren't usually as many plots and subplots, but that's part of their appeal. Jewel is a sweet story of how people come to terms with their pasts, learn to trust each other, and realize what the most important things in life really are. And those are lessons we all need to learn or be reminded of!

I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the series in 2010.

Enjoyed the trip to 1890's Montana

Maggie Brendan used details in such a way as to take me to 1890's Montana every time I opened this book. The small town and the people in it were real to me. Then being out on the prairie with Josh and Andy, I could feel the wind and see the miles of grass and hear the sheep.
Another thing I enjoyed was a heroine in that day having such an interesting job which she really enjoyed. This book was a wonderful vacation to somewhere I never even imagined going!

    Refreshing Read

When I saw this book I instantly fell in love with the cover! It's so beautiful. I truly enjoyed Brendan's descriptions of Montanta and the town in which the story takes place. In addition to the main characters, I loved the rest of the townspeople and want to know more about all of them. I'm glad that although this book is part of a series, it is a stand alone book that does not have to be read in order. I can't wait for book 3 to come out!

    Historical Drama

To me in this type of historical fiction, the actual "historical" part seems to take a backseat to the rest of the story. Other than the obvious details, this story could have very well taken place in a modern day setting with the same results. The historical setting just takes the reader back to a simpler time where life was harder and situations such as this were more cherished. Juliana is a young woman, who due to the death of her mother, has to take her life into her own hands and lands a job in a newspaper office. From there, she discovers more about life around the town and it helps to fuel her relationship with Josh. It was fun seeing the going-ons about the town and seeing what life was for like people back then. Juliana's relationship with Marion is interesting because it seems like they might not really be as close friends as they thought. It would be interesting to see a book from her perspective.

While I enjoyed this book, I did feel a bit annoyed at times with Juliana and Josh. I didn't really feel that much chemistry between them. What chemistry they did have seemed to come from a lot of unnecessary drama. It just seemed to me that several situations could have been totally avoided if the two had just sat down and talked and listened to the other. Instead, too many assumptions were made by both parties, causing friction and anger. There wasn't really another storyline that rivaled Juliana and Josh's. Their relationship was the central point of the book. Even though this book is the second in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. There are some references to the first book, but overall the characters don't really interact so if you haven't read the first book, you won't get lost at all.

Overall, I did enjoy the book and I'll be looking forward to the next book in the series. One more note, I absolutely love the color scheme of the cover of the book. The blues and greens are just gorgeous. You can't see the back of the book here, but it's just the loveliest shade of turquoise.

    Big Sky Romance

I will admit that the story had a bit of a slow start. But when it took off, you had no choice but to follow. A wonderful romance that has enough drama and adventure to almost mirror real life.

    great!

Josh McBride is probably one of my favorite heroes. I love the way he just blurts things out! He isn't too bold, but he will say what is on his mind, and I like that. I think he shocked Juliana a few times. ;) Juliana is a character that you can really understand. She has been hurt, and because of that is very cautious. I liked how things turned out with her father. That was a good ending, because I would have hated it if she never new what had happened to her dad. (I hate it when there are loose ties at the end of a book.) In the end Juliana realizes that Josh is well worth the risk, and everything turns out wonderfully. I'm really looking forward to book three!

    A gem of a book

Maggie Brendan's characters make this novel stand out among the rest of the historical romance genre. The hero and heroine fast become your friends, and the supporting cast cries out for their stories to be told. Although it follows some of the predictable paths romances do, paradoxically, Brendan weaves in enough of her unique style to keep it unpredictable. I didn't read the first book in the Heart of the West series, but I'm going to buy it, and I'm looking forward to the third book in the series. This from a reviewer who is not a fan of historical romances. If you are, you'll love it. If like me, you' aren't, you'll still love it. Novel Reviews and I give it a high recommendation.

    Great Read!

I read Maggie's first novel, No Place for A Lady and have been looking forward to reading Josh's story for a while. The Jewel of His Heart did not disappoint, right from the start I was hooked. There was a lot that happened to both Juliana and Josh that made me wander what more could go wrong! They, along with their faith however made it through...with a little help from Shebe the dog on the cover. Another character who was introduced who I really learned to like was Wes...I wonder what will happen with him? I can't wait to see what happens to April too...I surely hope gets reformed...she's a brat! This was a good story with a nice happy ending! I'll be looking for Book 3 soon!!!

I reviewed this book as a part of Revell's blog tour.
