Overview

This collection of folk tales, stories and myths told in comic book format by some of the biggest names in comic book history contains never before seen interpretations of ancient tales, including some rare work from legends like Will Eisner, Art Spiegelman, Harvey Pekar, Joe Kubert, and Robert Crumb. The stories within these pages range from spiritual, to supernatural, to humorous, to tales of wisdom, adventure and discovery. Some of the tales told here have been published as far back as the 1940s from artists all over the world, alongside incredible new talents whose work has been created exclusively for this volume. Other contributors include Tony DeZuniga, Adam Gorham, Joe Infumari, Yaakov Kirschen, Clifford Meth, Michael Netzer, Trina Robbins, Sharon Rudahl, and Andy Stanleigh.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Exemplary. The Jewish Comix Anthology succeeds in giving graphic novels the kavod, the gravitas, they have earned."  —Paul Weider, Oy! Chicago

"Sumptuous."  —Martha Cornog, Graphic Novel Reporter

Using the skills in research and cataloging that he developed as a student in library school, editor Bergson assembles the first volume of Jewish Comix Anthology, boasting comic adaptations of Jewish stories spanning myths and popular legends, as well as tales that highlight tenets of Judaism. The result of Bergson's work is a delightful collection of narrative voices and art styles—“hidden gems” uncovered in irrelevant anthologies. Among these are remarkable accounts of love, wisdom, oppression, strength, and faith, including excerpts by noted artists Art Spiegelman, Robert Crumb, and Joe Kubert.
Verdict Readers interested in Judaism or Jewish culture especially as adapted into the comics and graphic media would appreciate this collection that runs the gamut in expressing and interpreting a rich culture and people.—Laura Gallardo, St. Louis
