Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
The 15 essays in this volume (the first of two volumes on Judaism in this series) attempt to describe the spiritual wisdom and values of the Jewish faith from the biblical period to the Middle Ages. The contributing scholars are all experts in their fields. A sampling of topics covered includes the origin of Israelite religion, spirituality in the psalms, and the development of Kabbalah in the medieval period. Though this is a fine collection of essays with excellent follow-up bibliographies, there is some ambiguity regarding its intended audience. It is too scholarly for general readers with little knowledge of the Jewish religion but too basic for savants. For larger Judaica collections. Robert A. Silver, Shaker Heights P.L., Ohio
