This is one of those rare books which truly shaped history. Herzl's vision of a Jewish state was realized as he thought it would be a half a century after making this blueprint of his dream. An interesting exercise is of course to compare modern Israel with the Jewish state which Herzl dreamed. But anyone who wishes to probe a fundamental secular source of the founding of the state of Israel should read this visionary work.
It's always helpful to go back to original texts to understand the movements that arose from them. Phrases like 'the new state will be a rampart against Asia' and 'an outpost civilization aginst barbarism' clarify a lot of the history. Colonialism, totally acceptable in Herzl's time, is no longer acceptable. But Herzl's vision, laid out so starkly in this seminal work, is still in play.
I had read this book for a Univ. class. the book to me is like the Torah of Judaism, the Gossiples of Christianity, and the Quran of islam; not that it has any devine writings, but that it is a sincere book that has not been followed verbatim in action. What was written there as a dream and a plane for a jewish state has no reflection in what became the outcome decades later till this day. the author Theodor Herzl seem to have some sincerety and a just plan in his system as written in the book. Most important was the respect and co-existance w/ the pre-existing population in the region. The outcome on the other hand is in my opinion a nightmare to what Mr. Herzl proposed. as they say, he may be turning in his grave to find out how the land was aquired, and the unjust pains people in the region inflict on each other. my review means nothing till you read the history of the dream in the torah, the plan by england and leaders of the jewish society to aquire the land, and the process after WWII. w/ an unbias heart dare to read the story of fighting unjust by both sides. wether it is as small as rocks and rubber bullets, or as viciouse as suicide bombing which target innocent or not, and israeli gunships destroying towns as soldiars raid through the innocent to capture/kill the innocent. look at todays ignorance, and fatom tomorrow as to come. then judge the book to its value... sincere peace, A
