In The Jewish Tradition, Sexuality, and Procreation, Lewis Solomon presents the guidance offered by the Jewish tradition regarding questions of sexual and reproductive ethics. Solomon's approach is unique in presenting a wide spectrum of viewpoints from various strands of contemporary Judaism- traditional (Orthodox) and more modern and flexible (Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist). In providing the guidance offered by the Jewish tradition, Solomon draws upon modern commentators and authorities, who while looking to ancient text sources, have witnessed the contemporary societal transformation over the past three or four decades. Solomon also presents a new, nonlegalistic approach, drawing on the perspective of Spiritual Judaism.

Editorial Reviews

The Bookwatch
A work of impressive scholarship combining and contrasting secular sciences with Jewish history and cannon, 'The Jewish Tradition, Sexuality, and Procreation' offers solid, well-researched, highly recommended grounds for thought-provoking discussions and enlightening contemplations.
Solomon (affiliation not cited) examines sexuality and procreation from a wide spectrum of contemporary Jewish viewpoints from the traditional (Orthodox) to the more flexible (Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist). He advocates for Spiritual Judaism<-->a transformation of Judaism based on virtues of love and compassion rather than legalistic rules. Topics addressed include homosexuality in the Jewish tradition, matrilineal descent and the Jewish concern for genealogical lineage, and advances in genetic engineering. Annotation c.
