Even 40 years after that terrible day in Dallas, John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) remains one of America's most compelling -- and controversial -- chief executives. Scion-by-default of one of America's most famous families, the first Roman Catholic and the second-youngest man to occupy the White House, JFK was a study in contrasts: A man devoted to his wife and children -- and a serial womanizer; an idealist who called on Americans to live up to their country's highest principles -- and a cynical, occasionally ruthless politician; a striver for peace and international understanding -- and a sometimes reckless cold warrior. In John F. Kennedy, Joyce Milton presents an insightful assessment of the 35th president's life and legacy.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Humes's admiring study explains how Churchill's intellect and iron will made him one of the most towering figures of the 20th century. Although the author includes some personal information, the main focus is on his subject's public life. In contrast, Milton's book is much more personal. Although she is admiring of some of Kennedy's achievements, she spends considerable time examining his upbringing, marriage, health, sexual indiscretions, and drug use, explaining how all of these factors influenced his career and presidency. Both books include numerous excellent-quality photos and illustrations of the men as well as the people and events that influenced them. These books will be popular with high school audiences, especially those who are at least somewhat familiar with world and American history.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
