Overview

Colonel L. Fletcher Prouty, the former CIA operative known as “X,” offers a history-shaking perspective on the assassination of president John F. Kennedy. His theories were the basis for Oliver Stone’s controversial movie JFK. Prouty believed that Kennedy’s death was a coup d’état, and he backs this belief up with his knowledge of the security arrangements at Dallas and other tidbits that only a CIA insider would know (for example, that every member of Kennedy’s cabinet was abroad at the time of Kennedy’s assassination). His discussion of the elite power base he believes controlled the U.S. government will scare and enlighten anyone who wants to know who was really behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Millions have been gripped by Oliver Stone's film JFK and its premise that the plot to assassinate Kennedy originated beyond the highest levels of government. In the movie, the advocate of this theory is a character named "X, " who explains how and why this plot came about. Now his identity can be revealed: "X" is L. Fletcher Prouty, who was Chief of Special Operations during the Kennedy years.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Prouty, who was a Washington insider for nearly 20 years--in the last few of them as Chief of Special Operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Kennedy--has a highly unusual perspective to offer on the assassination and the events that led up to it. Familiar to moviegoers as the original of the anonymous Washington figure, played by Donald Sutherland in the Oliver Stone's movie JFK , who asks hero Jim Garrison to ponder why Kennedy was killed, Prouty leaves no doubt where he stands. The president, he claims, had angered the military-industrial establishment with his procurement policies and his determination to withdraw from Vietnam, and had threatened to break the CIA into ``a thousand pieces'' after the Bay of Pigs fiasco. His death was in effect a coup d'etat that placed in the White House a very different man with a very different approach--one much more acceptable to what Prouty consistently calls ``the power elite.'' Although he declares that such an elite has operated, supranationally, throughout history, and is all-powerful, he never satisfactorily explains who its members are and how it functions--or how it has allowed the current East-West rapprochement to take place. Still, this behind-the-scenes look at how the CIA has shaped postwar U.S. foreign policy is fascinating, as are Prouty's telling questions about the security arrangements in Dallas, his knowledge of the extraordinary government movements at that time (every member of the Cabinet was out of the country when Kennedy was shot) and his perception that most of the press has joined in the cover-up ever since. Library Journal
Prouty, the mysterious ``X'' in Oliver Stone's JFK , promises to explain why Kennedy was assassinated. Instead, he delivers a muddled collection of undocumented, bizarre theories, most significantly that a super-powerful, avaricious power elite engineered the Cold War and all its pivotal events--Korea, Vietnam, the U-2 incident, the Bay of Pigs, and the Kennedy assassination. Although they are never identified, these shadowy technocrats, working through the CIA, allegedly had Kennedy murdered because he was on the brink of ending America's commitment to Vietnam, along with its billions of dollars of military contracts. Prouty avoids some very important issues. Would Kennedy, a Cold War warrior's warrior, have indeed ended American support for Diem? And why couldn't the omnipotent power elite ensure the election of Richard Nixon, its preferred candidate, in 1960--especially since Kennedy won by only .02 percent? A much better choice is John M. Newman's JFK and Vietnam: Deception, Intrigue, and the Struggle for Power ( LJ 3/15/92). See also James DiEugenio's Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case , reviewed in this issue, p. 123.--Ed.-- Karl Helicher, Upper Merion Twp . Lib., King of Prussia, Pa.

A Very Discriptive and Detailed Book Covering a Number of Topics

This book is a must read, if you are looking for the truth when it comes to CIA operations, how the Vietnam War came to be, along with all of the events and controversy in the JFK Assassinaton. Prouty does a great job of including all of the facts through numerous different papers and other important document. Along with the documents, he had the first hand experience when it came to a majority of the information he talks about in the book. All of the controversial topics, including the CIA, Vietnam, the plot to assassinate JFK, and a high cabal are all backed up with factual information and not just what ifs. A very interesting part of the book occurs in the final chapters where the actual events of the assassination are talked about along with all of the unusual things and events that point to a high cabal ordering the assassination of JFK. The actual evidence that is found how the cover story has a number of loop holes is very interesting. There was a change that was occurring when Kennedy was in office it would have been really showcased if he had been President for a full two terms. How the CIA got started and how it had progressed to become very powerful is very interesting, along with what tactics they have been using for years in lower developed countries. This book also gives you a better picture of what the Vietnam War was actually like along with how long U.S. personel were actually there. Overall, this book is very eye opening when it comes to the CIA, Vietnam, and how the assassination of JFK went down.

The ultimate book for understanding US involvement in Vietnam

L.Fletcher Prouty's brilliant book takes us back to the end of WW2 thru the assasination of JFK in easy to understand language that is simply impossible not to believe. Prouty was there, first as a pilot involved in WW2 and later as a member of the CIA, and worked for the Joint Chiefs. He was as near to the coup that toppled JFK as anyone. Although he had no part in the coup, he brilliantly pieces it together. The motives and the reasons why JFK had to be removed were because he was determined to end US involvement in Vietnam, as well as him being a virtual lock to be re-elected in 1964. His enemies decided drastic measures were required to allow the Vietnam Conflict to continue on, ensuring billions in profit for the military industrial complex companies.

By far the most significant book of the century

Fletcher Prouty's knowledge of events of the post war era is surpassed by none, and his willingness to share this knowledge is truly remarkable. His courage and honesty are all the more significant in view of the circumstances he describes therein. This book provides more insight into the post war world than any other ten books combined. It is highly interesting to note that the book swiftly became almost impossible to find in any bookstore, and that the original price of US$18.95 has, in a few short years, skyrocketed to nearly $90, IF it can be found at all.

    Great Book

This book has been very informative and was written wonderfully. I thought that this book would be based upon the authors opinion but after reading you can tell without a doubt he is speaking from personal experience and he is very educated on the subjects that are not his experience. Leroy Fletcher Prouty was a very good author and I found this book to be not only extremely entertaining but very informative. If you are looking to gain knowledge about (as the title says) JFK the CIA, Vietnam and the Plot to Assassinate John F. Kennedy I highly recomend this book.
