Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-6--Moss's book is puzzling in many respects, including its intended audience. Each hyper-realistic two-page spread includes a piece of jigsaw puzzle overlaid on a larger nature scene with perspectives that range from high above the trees to close-ups of the forest floor. Each piece gives a clue as to what to look for in the larger picture. Children familiar with fairy tales will soon detect the "Little Red Riding Hood" theme (and their suspicions will be confirmed in the concluding portrait that incorporates all of the puzzle pieces). The final page shows a beach where a fully clothed wolf kneels in front of a reclining girl who is putting together a jigsaw puzzle of the same scene. The early paintings of the woods are at odds with the beach portrait: the wolf at the start is menacing in contrast to his courtly appearance at the end. Why he and the girl are entering the forest in a final small inset is unclear, as is why the wolf wears Little Red Riding Hood's cape. This book might be a dream-come-true for literary critics to deconstruct, but its child appeal is suspect.--Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
Kirkus Reviews
The book's cover declares, "Piece together the mystery!"—but readers' hopes for some sleuthing are never realized in a series of sentences with internal rhyme: "In a wood beneath a hood—/something stirred." Jigsaw-puzzle pieces on each page echo aspects of the full image in the double-page spread. Elements of the Red Riding Hood story are presented—woods, wolf, girl—but at book's end, there is no story, just a little girl putting together a puzzle that has the same image as the last illustration, of her and a wolf. That last and crucial picture is glued to the back cover, rendering the book difficult to use in libraries, but the main problem is that the suspense vanishes in that peculiar and disappointing scene. The book is suddenly pointless, and a use of gaudy typefaces and a jarring page design cannot compensate for the lack of drama.
