Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-10-A serviceable, if uninspiring, look at one of the most colorful characters in Texas history and legend. Best known for the Bowie knife he carried, the man was a hotheaded gambler, speculator, and adventurer. Gaines sticks to the facts, scrupulously including notes to sources cited for each chapter, but gives little feeling for the personality that made the frontiersman a legend and a leader. The author also offers fairly extensive background about events that, while somewhat helpful in placing Bowie in the general history of the movement, causes readers to lose the thread of the subject's own actions, diverting them from what should be the unifying path of the book. Black-and-white photos and reproductions appear throughout, and a helpful map of troop movements is also included. Useful for reports.-Sally Bates Goodroe, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
