Thrifty Way To Buy Initial Three 'Dresden Files' Books

I absolutely loved these first three books in the Dresden series; and this boxed set is a good value. If you like a good plot, plenty of action, magic, a personable/humorous protagonist, engaging supporting characters, and imaginative monsters, then get these books.

    Great Series Great Value

The first three books to the start of the Dresden files series in one awesome value bundle. These books start a little slow with Storm Front, but the pace picks up in the following two books as local Wizard Harry Dresden packs a high adrenaline punch of witty banter and explosive action. A definite must read told from the first person perspective of the now famous wizard.

    Excellent get away...

I get lost in Dresden's adventures and captivated by how tormented his character can be with himself. Excellent way to relax and get lost in a good story.

Great Introduction to the Harry Dresden Series

Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden is one of the most memorable creations in the fantasy field and an enjoyable series for genre and casual readers alike.
Harry gets mixed up with various monsters and wizards in a "real world" Chicago setting. Jim Butcher has created a distinctive magical universe and you'll want to spend time there. The characters are recognisable types but you do care about their fates. Their often messy, ugly fates.
But not too gory. Jim Butcher captures the "ugh!" without the "ew!"
This is all told in a noir detective style and the plot just cruises along. This is great beach reading.
I took this box set on a long weekend holiday and just plowed through the three books in the downtimes.

Be Careful if you buy this...You'll Be Hooked!

And since Jim just published #12, you'll be buying Dresden books for a long time!! I read the first book and was so completely and utterly hooked on the character of Harry Dresden and the cliffhanger he was left on, that I read the other two in a few days! Now I am on book 6 and almost onto #7! The great thing about these books is how Harry battles different "species" of the supernatural in each book (ghosts in one, vampires in another and fairies, goblins, etc in yet another!) These books will not let you go....you'll be waiting for book #13 in no time! If you like urban fantasy or just fantasy, sci-fi these are sure to please!

    I Also Recommend:

Offbeat Chicago Detective Meets Ghosts, Goblins and Demons

"My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there."

So reads one of the most original pieces of work that I have enjoyed in quite a while. Harry Dresden ("You let anyone have your WHOLE name at your own peril, for they will conjure by it!") is a private investigator in modern Chicago. Except, it is not quite Chicago as you and I may know it. In this version of the town, the Chicago PD has a "Special Crimes" unit that officially looks into "unusual" crimes, meaning for the better informed of us, those with a supernatural appearance.

Harry works privately finding wedding rings, pets, and the occasionally errant spouse or lover. These jobs don't really pay the bills, but what is the only wizard listed in the Chicago yellow pages to do? So, when the Special Crimes unit asks him to assist with a double murder, Harry is only to happy to help out, for his usual hourly rate, of course.

Harry immediately understands why they came to him. Someone is using perhaps the most powerful black magic he has ever seen to commit murder from miles away. Closed and locked doors, barred windows, and all the body guards in the world will not protect you from this dark mage. But, can Harry figure out who and what is behind these murders? Can he do it without condemning himself in front of his peers? And can he do it before the murderer strikes again?

This book opens a series of unique and very well written detective stories that will challenge your imagination and have you laughing out loud, hiding behind your chair, and generally trying not to look under the bed before you turn out the lights. Harry is a typical PI with little income, a disdain for and impossible impact on technology around him ("I have this effect on machinery..... I can kill a copier at fifty paces.") and a wry sense of humor that doesn't take himself or doubters around him too seriously. But, beware the errant demon or wizard that crosses him trail. They will pay!

    Dresden Files box set

I bought the box set after hearing good things about the series. I was actually looking for just the first book, but the local B&N only had the box set with the first book. It turned out well. I really enjoyed the series and I think I finished all 3 books in about 4 days. There is humor, adventure, and plenty of excitement. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes mystery, SF&F, or just looking for something different to read for a change.

Hooray for Jim Butcher - His feature character, Harry Dresden (wizard and warrior), makes every book in this series a page turner!

These are the first 3 novels of Jim Butcher's epic tale of Harry Dresden, wizard and PI, who lists his services for hire in the local phone book. When he's not working for the local special investigation police unit, he does whatever he can to make his financial ends meet. Supernatural happenings are Harry's specialty, and his investigations inevitably lead to the company of vampires, werewolves, and warlocks (to name a few). Harry does his best work under pressure, navigating an ever-expanding ethical quagmire with a touch of magic and a wicked sense of humor & irony.
I love the character of Harry Dresden. He is likable & funny and has got to be the luckiest unlucky character I've ever seen in fiction. You want to root for him the way you would for your kid's sports team! Other characters are just as complex, interesting, and compelling. Each book in this story makes you want to read more. These 3 books got me hooked on Harry's story. Try it; you'll like it!
Author Jim Butcher has already written 12 books in this series and plans on writing 23 in total. He is set to release the next book (#13), "Changes," in hardback April 2010. I have read them all and am anticipating the new book's release this year.
