Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

As long as there are teenage boys in the world, there will be an audience for Led Zeppelin, the '70s-era hard rock legend whose "Stairway to Heaven" is still one of the most-ever-played songs in the history of American FM radio. Jimmy Page was the mastermind of the Zeppelin juggernaut, and as one of the three most influential British rock guitarists of the late '60s, he certainly deserves Case's detailed and informed look at his past and present work. In this unauthorized biography, freelance writer Case focuses on Page's music as much as he does on Zeppelin's lurid touring lifestyle, and he is good at reporting Page's early work playing on countless recording sessions (ranging from Tom Jones's "It's Not Unusual" to the Kinks' "You Really Got Me"), as well as detailing the formation of Zeppelin, where Page combined his blues-based rock with singer Robert Plant's "soaring tenor moan" to create a radically new sound. While his enthusiasm sometimes overwhelms his writing ("The Teutonic implications of the airship's family surname invested a gothic sensibility to the ensemble's work"), Case successfully shows how Page and his Zeppelin's musical influence became "so broad and so established that even players who had never consciously emulated his techniques had been affected by them." JIMMY PAGE...

From the eyes of a Zeppelin enthusiast I thought this biography was really good and pretty accurate throughout. It seems like the book is better in the beginning and it is what it says, a biography. The author didn¿t really put his own voice and opinions into it and was mostly interviews and quotes. That aside it was well written and really showed how hard Jimmy worked in the music business to make it. Then it also showed the wild, hotel room trashing side of Zeppelin that had me laughing hysterically. It also has some great pictures which for me, 'I don¿t read at all' are great! It has quotes from the band, manager, ¿mum¿ and dad, him, and some of his childhood friends that really show me what he was like. Overall I¿ll give this book an 8. It was great though.

Ramble On .. Please Read me

I don't quite know where to begin - excited as I was for this to arrive - what a drag to read - the author did his research - yes all material lifted from internet acces and lots of newsprint articles - the average Page fan knows all this - tho the author has a nice commnad of the English language at least - I was saddened by his end notes a seemingly endless ramble where he prattles on and on about HIS OWN GUITAR PLAYING AND SONGWRITING ETC ETC. WAIT a minute wasn't this book about Jimmy Page? How come at the very end we are subjected to the author extoling all the wonderous virtues of his musical taste etc. If you have your own agenda to push - perhaps a bio isn't the place. This book is an ok starter I guess for all those who are new to Page - but a cheap shot for those who appreciate all that made Page who is he and all that Led Zep was. And any real Page fan would beg to differ as to his pagan roots and that of the English world in general - sadly I get the idea this guy idolises Page but I get a sense he never really understands his subject all that well - if you want to learn about Zep and all that just read Hammer of the Gods - at least it's much better written - not to fault this author too badly tho - at least he picked a great topic.
