Overview

One name and one name only is synonymous with jazz organ -- Jimmy Smith. Others played the electric organ in a jazz context before Smith, and certainly many did after him, but no one perfected a voice for the instrument like the mighty Hammond B-3 master from Philadelphia. Mixing blues, r&b, and gospel elements into his swinging jazz style, Smith brought the instrument to life. This selection of premier Verve recordings catches Smith in both large and small groups, fruitfully mixing it up with other soulful players like guitarists Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery (their intensely funky blues jam "James and Wes" is a highlight) and drummer Grady Tate. Smith's hits --"Walk on the Wild Side," "Got My Mojo Workin,'" and "Hobo Flats" -- are here, alongside other well-chosen instrumental workouts. Tracks like these are bread and butter for the new generation of Hammond-meisters now loose on the jazz scene. Smith makes them all sound like children.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Verve's Finest Hour collection of Jimmy Smith's work compiles 60 minutes of career highlights, including "Walk on the Wild Side," "Got My Mojo Workin'," "James and Wes," and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Though it's by no means a definitive compilation of Smith's music, it does provide an entertaining overview of some of his funkiest moments.
