Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Though it begins with the titular carol, Jingle Bells by Iza Trapani is actually a global tour of Christmas celebrations, from Mexico, to Sweden and the Philippines. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
In Jingle Bells, a one-horse open sleigh spirits young readers to Christmas celebrations 'round the world. Author/illustrator Iza Trapani brings a sense of adventure to the well-known ditty with additional lyrics and detailed illustrations that show festivities with pinatas in Mexico, lantern parades in the Philippines, carol singing in Kenya and gift-bearing gnomes in Sweden. Kids will love learning more about the various traditions from a note in the back and saying "Merry Christmas" in the different languages. Trapani's watercolors glow with holiday warmth. The double-page spread at the end proves especially endearing, with a brightly decorated room harboring smiling kids from other countries and a carrot-chomping sled horse. 2005, Charlesbridge, Ages 3 to 8.

K-Gr 3-As she did with Itsy, Bitsy Spider (Charlesbridge, 1998), Trapani takes an old rhyme and adds her own spin to it. Illustrated in muted watercolors, with a setting suggestive of a Victorian winter, the book features Ms. Sheep and her friends, all of whom want something from her. Kittens want milk, a pig wants slop, the dog wants bones, and a horse wants hay. Alas, except for the master, the dame, and the little boy who lives down the lane, the sheep just can't fill her neighbors' requests. As a result, all of them are in a huff, and cry out "Boo, boo, black sheep, shame on you!" However, she has a surprise for them. As it so happens, she has been hard at work knitting a woolen surprise for each and every one of them-mittens for the cats, a shawl for the horse, a fine hat for the pig. In the end, everyone has learned the value of sharing, and they come to her door loaded with presents. The illustrations are pleasing and the expressions on the faces engaging. The story itself works, although it's not particularly engaging. Other old favorites on sharing and caring, such as Angela Johnson's Julius (Orchard, 1993) or Nancy Carlson's Harriet's Halloween Candy (First Avenue, 1994) are just as much fun.-Roxanne Burg, Thousand Oaks Library, CA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

buy the book, not the nook

This is a charming book. We have a hard copy of it and love it. The pictures are lovely and my class of international students enjoys seeing their home countries and celebrations represented. The book itself deserves 5 stars.

But, the nook version of the book does not.

When we TRIED to buy the ebook version on nook kids, it wouldn't load. It flashes to the first page, and then disappears.

I contacted B&N customer service about this multiple times. The final word was that I was simply out the money for this book.

Having had additional problems with B&N customer service over another Nook issue, I no longer shop B&N.
