Overview

It’s Chad’s first spring as a batboy, and the Pine City Porcupines are hot—until they come up against the league-leading Heron Lake Humdingers. Now Chad’s got a whole lineup of problems: his favorite player, shortstop Mike Stammer, thinks he’s jinxed; Dylan, the other batboy, doesn’t even like baseball; there’s a goofy new porcupine mascot on the field; plus, Chad has to fill in as batboy for the Herons. It’s a good thing there’s something in the cards—his baseball cards, that is—that can help Chad sort it all out.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Welsh
In the first book of the "Topps League Story" series, young Chad finally lands his dream job as batboy for the Pine City Porcupines. Everything is going great until he shows up the first day to find that he's not the only one that was given the honor of unloading the tour bus and cleaning up the locker room. Much to Chad's chagrin, a fellow classmate named Dylan has also scored the coveted role. That means one of them will have to take care of the other ball teams that play The Porcupines. To make matters worse, Chad's favorite player, Mike Stammer, thinks he's jinxed. How else can one explain a once-successful player that now trips over his own feet and throws the ball way out of bounds instead of to the first-baseman nine times out of ten? Chad wants nothing more than to help Mike overcome his losing streak and get along with Dylan, but that's going to take a lot of work and some luck of his own! Reluctant readers will enjoy the multiple pictures and short chapters. The vocabulary and rhetoric are appropriate for third grade and up, but a middle-schooler would most likely find the book a bit too easy. Card-collectors will also rejoice in the collectable cards included in each book. Reviewer: Heather Welsh
