Overview

A bodhisattva is an enlightened being who has forsaken entry into nirvana until all beings are saved. In Japan, Korea, China, and across the world,Jizo Bodhisattva is known as the Buddhist "saint" of travelers. A protector for those journeying in both the physical and spiritual realms, Jizo has special significance for pregnant women and for those who have lost their children. Jizo practice involves meditation, ceremony, prayer, and the creation of sanctuaries, which all serve to help those grieving the loss of loved ones.

Jizo Bodhisattva: Modern Healing and Traditional Buddhist Practice covers the historical evolution of Jizo Bodhisattva as viewed across Asia and in the United States. Inspired by her own personal experience with Jizo practice, Jan Chozen Bays has written this compelling text to help readers better understand how Jizo can help people confront human suffering. In straightforward text, accompanied by beautiful black-and-white photographs and illustrations, Bays has written the perfect book for those who are grieving, those who have lost loved ones, or anyone with an interest in Buddhism. Jizo Bodhisattva will bring you closer to understanding the rich, diverse ways in which Buddhism is practiced across the globe.

Author Biography: Jan Chozen Bays, a practicing Buddhist for the past 25 years, is the spiritual head of the Larch Mountain Zen Center in Corbett, Oregon. She is in the dharma lineage of Maezumi Roshi, author of Teaching of the Great Mountain (see page 12) and is a member of the White Plum Sangha. Also a practicing pediatrician, Jan Bays specializes in child abuse detection and prevention. This is her first book.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Bodhisattva means "enlightenment being" in Sanskrit i.e., one who is ready to pass over into nirvana and merge into oneness with the universe. The bodhisattva, however, postpones nirvana out of compassion for others, vowing to help them until they are able to make the journey. Like Christian saints, bodhisattvas mediate between human and divine realms; they often work miracles, and much like patron saints they have areas of special interest or competence. A mostly legendary figure regarded as a protector of children and the weak as well as a healer, Jizo Bodhisattva is widely revered. Bays, a pediatrician specializing in child-abuse prevention and a Zen priest who heads the Larch Mountain Zen Center in Oregon, presents a clear and intelligent portrait of Jizo. Displaying a gift for communicating emotions, she also shares how that figure has affected her personal experiences with children and helped her deal with collective pain. This book will appeal to both casual readers and specialists in public and academic libraries, especially those with substantial religion collections. James F. DeRoche, Alexandria, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    A rich story well told.

Historically sound and especially relevant in these uncertain times, Chozen Bays' clear writing creates a wondrous collage of this sweet 'saint' of Buddism. Travellers in transition all, may we benefit from Jizo's healing protection. I highly recommend this book to anyone, Buddhist or not. Peter Renner, Ed.D. Galiano Island, British Columbia, Canada
