Overview

When it comes to sultry, laid-back rockin', singer-songwriter J. J. Cale rules. His best-known songs, "Call Me the Breeze," "Cocaine," and "After Midnight," have become staples for artists like Eric Clapton , but the songwriter reclaims them on J. J. Cale Live , which was recorded with his longtime band in various concert settings during the '90s. His "Cocaine" sounds as weary as an all-night bout with the white powder; "After Midnight" is luxuriously sexy, and "Call Me the Breeze" cruises like a 90-mile-an-hour road trip through Cale's native Oklahoma. For pure romance there's a soft-as-a-gardenia-petal version of "Sensitive Kind" while the bitter-edged "Money Talks" and "People Lie" let you know that Cale is still in touch with harder side of life. Also included in the set are "Mama Don't" and "Magnolia," both Cale signature tunes. While none of the songwriter's more recent material is covered on J. J. Cale Live , the CD is a reminder of the artist's long and vibrant career.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Travis Drageset
Cale's live performance style does nothing to quell his reputation for laid-back but pristine guitar playing and reserved "Mississippi John Hurt"-style delivery. A man who truly appreciates the value of restraint, Cale leaves plenty of room for his immaculate guitar lines, even to the point of irony on an ambling version of the previously insistent "Mama Don't." This collection, which was gleaned from an assortment of live shows dating from 1990-1996, finds Cale allowing his songs to unfold organically. Of particular note is the lilting "Magnolia." Less nostalgic than when it first appeared on 1971's Naturally, this version, recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1996, is crisper and more clipped, replacing the original's sense of longing with the resigned confidence that permeates this entire set.

We were fortunate to see JJ Cale perform this collection of music live over the summer and have enjoyed listening to the CD. The music is classic blues at its finest.
