Children's Literature
J.J. Rabbit and his friends Mole, Squirrel, Owl, and Badger battle everyday problems of life Frog-and-Toad style in this two story selection from the "I Am Reading" series. In the first story, the forest creature friends band together to help J.J. unravel the mystery of huge footprints found outside his burrow; which happen to be imprints made by Badger while moving to his new house. In the second tale J.J., Squirrel, and Mole attempt to find an adventure and get "sidetracked" as J.J. gets dangerously stuck in the mud. Once J.J. is rescued the whole crew is hopelessly lost and then frightened by the sounds of a nearby wolf. The wolf they thought they heard is only Owl, who has come to lead them home. They are eager to get home so they can wake up early the next morning to find a "real adventure." Young readers will thoroughly enjoy the repetition and suspense of the first story, but may be unable to fully appreciate the second story with its tongue in cheek ending. The whimsical, friendly illustrations make this an enjoyable, quirky book that kids will love to read on their own. A fun read with cute characters helping each other in the name of friendship. 2005 (orig. 1999), Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 6 to 9.
