Julie West, struggling apprentice jockey, pins her dreams of an elusive win on the new trainer in town, never suspecting she’s a person of interest—and not because of her riding ability.

Kurt didn’t expect his contrary colt to flourish under Julie’s feminine touch nor for his own rusty heart to soften. However, his deceit sucks them both into the cross-hairs of a killer, and suddenly much more than their love is in danger.

    Great read!

Someone suggested I try this book and I am glad I did.Although I am not familiar with the horse racing scene, this story captivated me from beginning to end.The aspiring jockey and the hardened trainer were drawn together because of a murder.Without giving away the story, the action was fast-paced and interesting. The struggling track workers were believable and always engaging. The animals had personality plus and you were rooting for them all the way! This was my most enjoyable read this summer.

    Loved this book!

I've been a lover of horse books since I was a little girl, but I've gotten away from that in the past few years. This book brought me back and made me remember what I loved about books set around horses.

I loved the fact that this was set behind the scenes instead of the glamorous side of horse-racing. It was so interesting to see how things worked. I enjoyed the suspense side as well, the disillusioned undercover cop drawn back into a case where he would have knowledge as a horse trainer. That he falls for his rider is icing on the cake!

    A Great Read!

I just finished reading Bev Pettersen's romantic mystery at the track.I was immediately captivated by this book. The plot was masterfully created and the lives and loves of its' main characters were intriguing from beginning to end. However it was the attention to the development of the secondary characters and the animals that truly made this book a great read. Can't wait for Pettersen's next book!!!

    Horse racing and murder

I was kept in the story. Good see the races and horses.
Kurt is a horse trainer and his horse is about to race when he gets a call. He looks at who's calling and finds his old boss Archer from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He quit 11 months ago to be a full time horse trainer. He was tired of going undercover all the time.
Archer said,"They needed him on this case as a horse trainer and not to take his good horses. His old partner Connor had been murdered. He had stopped to help a horse trailer and after followed him to the track. He talked to a jockey named Julie West. The trailer belonged to Otto Laing."
So Kurt left his good horses and took a new horse to teach the gate too. and a Horse that looked good but had lost all of his races so far. Also took Cisco his work horse.
He is across the barn with his horses to Otto's horse but he cant see that horse because its blocked off so no one can bother it. Otto horse hates him.
Kurt offers Julie to ride his horse in the mornings and see how well she does at her first race before deciding who will be jockey for the race.
Kurt fits in because he is a real trainer and no one knows he is a cop.
It shows the world of racing. How hard undercover can be with all the lying.
I enjoyed reading Jockeys and Jewels and look forward to reading more books from Bev. I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review.

A great summer read. The setting and character development make you feel like you are visiting with friends, probably why I couldn't put it down. Hopefully I can find some more of Pettersen's books to get me through the summer.

Really 4.5 stars.  Rip-roaring fun with horse racing, a roller-c

Really 4.5 stars.  Rip-roaring fun with horse racing, a roller-coaster romance, a spunky heroine, a sexy hero, and a little suspense.  Don’t expect crime suspense—it’s more of a police procedural.  We know who the bad guys are early on, the job is to bring them to justice. And the denouement is both unnecessary and implausible.  But the book was hard to put down.  The best suspense is in the horse racing.  I know very little about horses, but I love reading about them when the author is a true horse-lover.  The wonderful detail of this book puts you right at the racetrack with all its danger, speed, and dirt—a great trip to a place I’d never visit in real life.  Bev Pettersen is a talented writer, and I will certainly read more of her books.

    Recommend

First time reading this author and really enjoyed this book and I am so happy to see there are many other books written by her which should keep me busy reading for a while. Enjoyed reading the background of the racing world since I love placing a bet every so often. My favorite parts were the horses and their reactions to things happening around them. Romance (some sexual content) and light suspense/mystery. JudyE

    Great Romance/Mystery

I loved the story of Julie (a wannabe jockey) and Kurt (a top thoroughbred trainer)... The mystery involved smuggling jewels from the United States into Canada... I can usually figure these things out pretty quickly but this one took me a while. Author developed characters really well and the story line kept me interested page after page... Helps if you have an interest in horses and/or horse racing... Kurt was a tough guy until he met all 108 pounds of Julie... Now on to second and then third book of this trilogy.

World of racing explored for the novice

Although I've never been to a horse race, I feel like a pro thanks to the great eye for detail author Pettersen shows. Her characters are normal, likeable people in extraordinary situations, the kind of characters and situations a reader likes to spend time with. A great read for both romance readers and mystery buffs.

    I loved this book.

This was an extremely well done mystery set in the horse racing world. The backside and its inhabitants were portrayed accurately. Aside from just a few terms that were different than what I've heard, and I assume those were regional, I felt like I knew that backside. The RCMP/trainer with lots of secrets and baggage, the apprentice jockey with lots to prove and her own baggage, and Otto the horrible trainer. These characters were realistic and the story flowed. I would recommend this book, especially to anyone who loves horses and horse racing.
