School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-9 A rambling satirical story of a young man who finds out that invulnerability isn't all that it's cracked up to be, set in a doubtless-near future when 35 grand a month is reasonable rent for a city apartment. Aside from drawing dinosaurs and sighing over Vicki Zomba, daughter of voodoo/hypnotist/crime queen Ma Zomba, 20-year-old Joe Gosh (just like wow, only Gosh) hasn't found much direction to life. Then he meets Ira Jeeters, boy genius, whose mail delivery machine renders anything passed through it incapable of being cut, burned, or otherwise harmed. Seeing a unique opportunity, Joe ``mails'' himself, and does indeed emerge more powerful than a locomotive, etc. Unfortunately, Joe just can't seem to turn his new abilities into big bucks, and worse yet, the effect turns out to be only temporary. By the end, he does manage to find True Love, as well as prevent Ma Zomba from taking over either his mind or Jeeter's invention, but readers will have to struggle through a story full of distracting flashbacks, irrelevant details, and quirky characters to find out how. John Peters, New York Public Library
