Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Who was the first baseball catcher to win a Major League Baseball's title since 1942? If there is a young baseball fan who does not know the answer, get this book. Joe Mauer earned the title of Baseball Superstar. So many young people love and play the game of baseball and this book will introduce them to one of the game's star players. With these short chapters and close-up photos of Mauer during his career, readers can follow his journey in the big leagues. He started for the Chicago White Sox in 2006, helping his team win against the Minnesota Twins by becoming the first catcher to lead the majors in batting average. Mauer had always been a hometown hero in Minnesota; during his four years of playing high school baseball there he struck out only once. Although growing up he tried many sports to see which one would claim his heart, it was always baseball he loved. In 2001 his dream of becoming a Major League baseball catcher came true. To be a great player one has to work very hard all the time. He broke many records which other good players had set. Within this short book baseball terms are explained clearly and included in a glossary. Two books and several websites about Mauer are listed as additional reading for those wanting to know more details about this winning catcher. An index and timeline are found at the conclusion of the book so readers can see how long it took Mauer to move from one advanced stage to another. Within the brief chapters of two or three pages each, there are repeated words to describe his life: work, power, and success. The book could have benefitted by including more information about how Mauer's interest in sports was encouraged during his early years as a young boy. The book offers quick summaries of a handsome, smiling young man who earned his fame and honors the hard way—by striving to do his best in each practice and in each game. This is part of the series "Superstar Athletes" which includes great sports figures from a variety of sports, such as Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, Lebron James, and many others. Photographs are from a variety of sources including Sports Illustrated KIDS. This book would be an excellent gift for a budding baseball player in the family. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy
