Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Simple, straightforward information is presented about the life cycle of the kangaroo. There are incredible snapshots of a newborn in this marsupial's pouch, along with photos at different times during the joey's growing period. For the most part, the text and pictures are focused on the kangaroo; there are a few areas that include other mammals and marsupials. Some of the print is difficult to read because the photographic background makes it difficult to see. Young readers may need some guidance about how to navigate the text between the main body, captions, and labels. Also, children may need an introduction to the features of informational text such as the glossary, index, content vocabulary, and bold type. At the back of the book, parents and teachers will find a note with tips and ideas when using the book. This book is one of six in the "Life Cycles" series. The living things covered in the series (besides the kangaroo) include sharks, frogs, butterflies, chickens, and sunflowers; a book about a reptile would have been a nice part of the series.
