School Library Journal
Gr 6-12-- In a first-person narrative form that will appeal to many readers, Joey's Story delivers a hopeful antidrug message. The 19-year-old musician traces his involvement with substance abuse from childhood experimentation to full-blown addiction during his teenage years. Many familiar ingredients can be found in Joey's account, notably a dysfunctional family that features an abusive, alcoholic father and codependent mother. Eventually Joey marries and becomes a father himself. To his dismay, he discovers that his behavior toward his new family is a mirror of the past. A dose of tough love from his young wife and a good rehabilitation program turn the young man around. The book, based on actual interviews, adopts a fast-forward mode at times and is a little lean on text, but the presentation is authentic. The posed black-and-white photographs are less believable. Overall, Joey's Story will attract readers, particularly reluctant ones, and provide an effective vehicle for conveying important information to young adults. A list of hotline numbers is provided. --Sue A. Norkeliunas, Arlington Senior High School, LaGrangeville, NY
