This is the latest in a series of Johann Strauss operettas on Naxos, each taken from a single performance of a dialogue-free concert version. While the earlier Strauss outings were genuine rarities, there are several NIGHTs to consider--all have their problems, though. Good things here: Daniel Buckard sings quite well as the Duke; the original orchestration is used, without the later additions by Korngold, and you probably get more of the actual score (and bonus tracks) than on any other recording. Not so good things: the principal females share their roles among them, making it hard to identify any voice with a particular character; some soloists have pitch issues, or find themselves too far from the mike at times. As the sound is generally good, chalk that up to recording live, and enjoy this set for the bargain it is.
