John Barry: Zulu

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Velez
The range of John Barry's music places him securely in the pantheon of contemporary composers. The former rock 'n' roll trumpeter, born in York, England, has a special affinity for Africa, as attested to by his Oscars for BORN FREE 1966 and OUT OF AFRICA 1985. And this first-ever stereo recording of ZULU 1964 is a knockout. And the rest of this collection, which includes selections from 16 films plus a SUNSILK television commercial!, amply demonstrates the composer's astounding accomplishments. THE SPECIALIST, THE DEEP, and MERCURY RISING are all first-class adventure scores, THE COTTON CLUB, insinuatingly sensual, MIDNIGHT COWBOY pop 'n' playful, KING KONG 1976 brooding and ominous, FRANCES stirringly romantic, and DANCES WITH WOLVES, another Oscar winner, movingly lyrical. It's all beautifully played, and one needn't have seen the movies to savor the abundance of this musical banquet.
