John Bewick: Engraver on Wood, 1760-1795: An Appreciation of His Life Together with an Annotated Catalogue of His Illustrations and Designsby Nigel Tattersfield, John Bewick
The brother of England's most renowned wood engraver of the time, Thomas Bewick, is the focus of the second in a three-volume series on illustration during the 18th and 19th centuries, the other two considering the Beilby-Bewick workshop. The sketch of the engraver's 35-year life takes only 63 pages. The catalogue is arranged by sections on books, broadsides, and periodicals; newspapers, puzzles and games, book plates, handbills, and trade cards and billheads; woodcuts for ephemeral and unattributed publications; unattributed book illustrations; and miscellaneous woodcuts. A catalog of Bewick's library is appended. Many of the woodcuts are illustrated.
