John Brookes is one of the few people who focuses on garden design - getting the maximum effect by getting all the aspects of a garden to work together. So the book is organized around topics that shape a garden but sometimes get lost in 'Oh, let's plant some of those.' When you see a plant you like, there are other question to consider, and this book shows you what they are, The publisher, Dorling-Kindersley - is one of the best organizers of visual information. As usual, the book is beautifully designed - not only in appearance, but also in organization of information. The organization of the book is breathtaking in its clarity, depth and beauty - 11 topics with sub-topics covers the subject. But as you look at it - the photos, the drawings that illustrate the patterns that aren't always immediately visible to the novice - its focus and apparent effortlessness is really a distillation of Brookes' considerable skill and experience. The book is as much for browsing and inspiration as information. But don't rush it. It takes time to get a sense of what you want to do. Whatever you do in your garden - however much or little - this book will help you to get the maximum result for the effort.
