    Perfect fiction!

These stories are returned to me in childhood and in my head come up just pleasant memories. The book is well formatted and perfectly looked on my NOOK.

    Really love this series

Was reading Mars Chronicles ago, at age 10-11, was incredibly impressed. Was particularly struck by the number of sequels, and most importantly I loved these books.

Really captivated by these books written so long ago.

I admit it, I purchased the John Carter of Mars Series when I heard they were being made into a movie. I had read several of Edgar Rice Burroughs TARSAN books decades ago, and thought they were interesting...but dated and kind of racist. BUT: I adore these books - Mr. Burroughs imagination is amazing and he describes technology decades before they came about. You can really see the influence these books had on future Science Fiction writers and movie makers. I am looking forward to watching the movie, but I expect to NOT like it...as there will be too much fighting and blood for my taste. Funny, I don't mind reading about the violence, but I don't like watching it on screen. Again, I do recommend these books, esp. if you enjoy Sci Fi.

I think the series lost something when the main character changed for the last two books in this five book collection.

I think the series lost something when the main character changed for the last two books in this five book collection. We go from a character that has a view point closer to that of the reader, in that they're both new to the setting of the story, to two different characters that have been raised in the setting. Also the fourth and fifth books just end. It's like the author hit a word count and then wrapped up the rest as quickly as possible in the last two pages. Of the five books, the fifth is I think the weakest of the set, in that it contained alot of the problems as the fourth book, and gave us a main character that was such a departure from the ones in what came before hand. The main characters of the first four books were active; they looked to do things when put in the situations they encountered. In the fifth book, the main character was very passive. When something happened, the character's response was often to have a positive outlook based on the fact that they were still alive and to do nothing that would actually improve the situation.

Given that I feel there was a definite decline in the series as it went along, I don't see myself seeking out and reading any of the other works that take place in this setting at any time in the near future.

    Great Read - Again

This is an awesome series! My Dad and I first read this series back in the mid-60's and loved it then, when he passed away 10 yrs ago, my Mom gave away all his books. This has been an awesome find for me and I have loved reading the first 2 books again and sharing them with my grandsons. I/we look forward to reading the rest... then onto the Tarzan series... anyone know where to find the old Doc Savage series of books?

This version of the John Carter series is very well formatted. It includes links to books and chapters as well as a index of characters and things found in the series. It's a bit pricier than some of the other versions offered for the nook by B&N, but for all five books you could do much worse. I recommend this version.

I first read this series 40 years ago and loved them. To understand that these books were written very early in the twentieth century is amazing. it may not have the science that Jules Verne had in his books, but E.R. Burroughs wrote action and not science. Still, it happened on Mars and I have always wanted to go there, more then to the Moon. This series is action packed so I hope they do a good job on the movies. KBJones

No man has ever loved a woman the way John Carter loves Dejah Thoris.  Great stories.  Great action.  But to hear the way John Carter loves Dejah Thoris and will fight an entire planet for her.  That is what got me.  The movie is sorely missing that element of the books.

This author was a man of anothers world before his time. As often I discover books from movies that were based on them. THIS was a reasured a Treasure discovered when a recent movie "John Carter of Mars" made its debute and as habit I checked to see if there was a book/books behind the movie....... All I can say is how happy I am there is. But the facinating part was WHEN they were written, long before my time and when I finish this series I will explore his others. This is the man who is beghind "The Land That Time Forgot, Tarzan" and more WOW!!!!!! BETTER than JCMars the movie....But Again while not completely inline with the movie they did ok!

    Should be free.

These books are really great, but they should not cost any money, as they are in the public domain.* Don't buy this, just go online and install a free .pdf format version. Don't line the pockets of thieves!

(* In the public domain means that the author of the work has died and 70 years have passed without anyone renewing the copyright. The public now owns the content of the novels.)

    Amazing read

A good friend of mine was reading this series and he suggested it to me, praising the author. We went to go see the movie and, personally, I thought it was an okay movie. But my friend hated it. He said that the only thing they had in common was the title and characters. So, because he suggested it to me, and out of curiosity to find out how much the two really had in common, I got this series on my nook. After reading the first book, I discovered that my friend was right. They hardly followed the same storyline. But the books themselves are amazing! There is a never ending supply of twists, and you never tire of the extaordinary vocabulary in this series! These books trump all when it comes to detail and plot structure! I would recommend this astonishing series to anyone who loves a good page-turner and an exotic setting!

    I like the author

I realize that this review will probbaly never be read, but i just wanted to exsplaun that the reviews that say the mpvie is a lot worse are lying. Just becuase they strayed from the plot of the books doesn' make it terrible.

    An Excellent Read!

I can't believe I haven't read these before! I loved the story, it could have been written last year not 100 years ago! I fell in love with the characters and I liked the different angles and groups of people on Mars. The classy story is entertaining and a quick read.
My only regret is that I couldn't find books 6-11 in it's own set so I had to buy a second e-book that had all 11 books in it. :) But this will definitely be a favorite of mine I would read more than once.
