Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) has obtained lasting fame for his works about the jungle hero Tarzan, and also for the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, but he was a voluminous writer who also wrote in many other genres as well. Burroughs famously got started out of disdain for others’ writings, noting, "...if people were paid for writing rot such as I read in some of those magazines, that I could write stories just as rotten. As a matter of fact, although I had never written a story, I knew absolutely that I could write stories just as entertaining and probably a whole lot more so than any I chanced to read in those magazines."

This edition of Burroughs’ The John Carter of Mars Series: Volumes 1-5 is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and is illustrated with over a dozen pictures.

I went to see the movie and really enjoyed it. I immediately looked up the books on my nook. Not dissapointed. I was a little hesitant at first because of the time that the books were written.. sometimes authors of this era have a dry writing style or use archaic language. This is a very well written, fast paced, enjoyable read. Also, it is CHEAP!

I read the Tarzan books when I was ten years old. After those my love for science fiction and space odessy thrillers took off. By the the age of 12 i had read everything Edgar Rice Burroughs had written......at least three times. I could recite from those book and often did. The John Carter books were my favorites then as well as now. I often wonder what Mr. Burroughs would think of today's slaughter of his novels for tv and films. I wish a diirector would create a film using an unadulterated version of ERB'S books, combined with today's film technology to create space masterpieces. The cheesy, inane films so far produced have been abombinations. The one made last year proves my point. Although a little dated in prose and manners, these books are just as good today as they were when first produced. For readers of any age. AD

Saw the Disney movie then read the book. Loved it and found that the movie was not all that the book was. There were a few problems with book 5 but I was able to overcome them by having to go to the contents and selecting the next chapter.

The recent film reminded me how much I enjoyed these books as a teen. Reading them again, almost forty years later, is great fun and I'm enjoying the adventure now as much as I did then. If you've never read them, I highly recommend the journey to Barsoom and adventuring along with John Carter and Tars Tarkas. Pack your sword, let yourself go and enjoy the ride.
