The CD is made of wafer thin plastic which cracks very easily and even more so because they mount it on a super thick and hard plastic spindle that simply wont let go of the CD until it cracks. Way to go Impulse!

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Johnny Hartman has a deep voice and this selection of standards is worthwhile, but the reason to buy it and play it several times a year is the Coltrane solo in Autumn Serenade. This solo is Coltrane's best solo and the song is sonic beauty epitomized. Beautiful and sad and joyous. You'll play this CD a lot, but every time you, you will play serenade more than once. This album is sensationally beautiful. Coltrane and Hartman are a perfect and stunning duo. This is easily one of those albums that real jazz enthusists cannot live without. Every song on this album is undoubtedly dripping with glamour and serenity! Fabulous album!

This album makes my top 20 all time jazz albums, and is one of my favourite vocal vinyls. Pick this up and you'll be happy you did. It's a great listen.

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
John Coltrane's matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman was in prime form on the six ballads, and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" have never been topped. Coltrane's playing throughout the session is beautiful, sympathetic, and still exploratory; he sticks exclusively to tenor on the date. At only half an hour, one wishes there were twice as much music, but what is here is classic, essential for all jazz collections.
