Overview

John Coltrane (1926-1967) continues to be one of the most revered artists in jazz history, and this volume is by far the most complete guide ever assembled to his recordings and professional career. Every known recording is detailed here, along with over thirty live recording sessions that have never been listed anywhere. The first session listed is a previously unknown private recording date from 1946, three years before Coltrane's professional recording debut. For every session there is a complete listing of every issue worldwide through 1993, in every format including LP, cassette, video, and CD, using a clear and modernized version of the standard discographical format. The book is a gold mine of photos, mostly unpublished. Musician, song title, and recording company indexes are included. Produced with the cooperation of the Coltrane family and of recording companies and researchers worldwide, this is the definitive reference on one of the great artists of our century.

Author Biography: Yasuhiro Fujioka writes regularly for the major Japanese jazz magazines, including "Sewing Journal" and "Jazz Critique", and produced "The Exhibition of Jazz" in Tokyo in 1992. Lewis Porter, a music professor at Rutgers University, Newark, and a leading jazz scholar, educator, and author, provided a great deal of information from his own Coltrane research.
