John Corbett

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Actor John Corbett is certainly familiar enough -- you know him as Chris, the cool philosopher-DJ on Northern Exposure, or as Aidan, the sensitive artist who was one of Carrie Bradshaw's many loves on Sex and the City, or as the unlikely groom in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But few may be as acquainted with his musical talents. Set aside the skepticism: His country-based eponymous debut is a thoroughly agreeable affair, with songs from skilled tunesmiths on the order of Jon Randall and Hal Ketchum and a solid country rock band behind his sandpapery, personable vocals. From fuzzed-out grinders (such as the thundering "Wichita," a powerful tale of the girl who got away) to a...

From fuzzed-out grinders (such as the thundering "Wichita," a powerful tale of the girl who got away) to a thumping, Tim McGraw-like mid-tempo musing on the course of a life, "Good to Go," Corbett inhabits his characters and conveys real emotions as adeptly as he has on the screen. On the heartache side, he delivers an affecting reading of the urgent southern soul-tinged "Back Door to My Heart" and shows a smooth, crooning style on a lovely, honky-tonk-infused love letter to the female of the species, "Judge a Man." An Allmans-inspired twin guitar attack sets the pace on a funky paean to cutting your losses, "Best Move," and the laments of a laid-off workingman who finds inspiration in the songs of the Man in Black inspire Corbett's most measured but deeply felt performance in "Cash," a twangy ballad with a double-edged title. In attitude and approach, Corbett comes from a place that's built to last, striking a pleasing balance between the raw and the polished, impressing as an artist supremely comfortable in his own skin.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
As an actor John Corbett is best-known for his roles on Northern Exposure and Sex & The City, two television shows where he played rugged yet sensitive guys -- guys that seemed at home in the outdoors, guys that were definitely guys, but they weren't overly macho; they were strong and supportive. Given that background, it shouldn't come as a great surprise that his eponymous debut album finds him singing rugged yet sensitive country; it's music that you could imagine Aidan singing as he builds furniture for Carrie on Sex & The City. But it's not so much that Corbett is capitalizing on his onscreen persona, it's that his strengths as an actor are his strengths as a musician: he comes across as a thoroughly likeable, normal guy, the kind of man that women fall for, the kind of man other men would have a beer with. Those charms translate as successfully on John Corbett as they do onscreen. Perhaps Corbett doesn't have the most distinctive voice, but it's sincere and has just the right amount of twang, and he sounds comfortable and assured, yet never cocky. It fits the country music that he's singing, which is straight-ahead and tuneful, relaxed and friendly. This surely isn't hardcore country, yet it proudly puts dobros, harmonicas, and twangy Telecasters on display, which all keep John Corbett far away from the realm of pop music, even when it has more than its fair share of hooky, memorable tunes. But what makes this a winning debut is that it feels natural and genuine, as if Corbett isn't attempting to parlay his success as an actor into a music career, he's just simply making the music he wants to make. Of course, that sense of naturalism made him appealing as an actor and it makes him appealing as a singer, especially for those who already are fans. But the best thing that can be said about John Corbett is that this laid-back, rootsy record can be easily enjoyed by country fans who aren't fans of Corbett the actor, or even by listeners who aren't even aware that he is an actor, and that' s a very tricky thing for an actor launching a singing career to pull off.

    Chris in the Morning

Hey, its Chris in the morning from Northern Exposure; one of the greatest shows of all time! I'm not a country music fan at all, but Corbett does a fantatic job on this album.

    An unexpected, exceptional recording

This CD has become an all time favorite of mine since I purchased it a couple of weeks ago. The songs are extremely well crafted, and the musical backing is first rate, but what really sells it is Corbett's heartfelt, sincere vocals. He truly gets behind every word he sings - and that is a rare delight for the listener. From first hand experience, I can say that this CD provides perfect company on what would be an otherwise lonely evening.

    In LOVE with this voice!

JohnCorbett---A musician/singer? YES!! It's an amazing CD!! I'm so in love with John's voice and have found that I'm looking forward to a breezy, rainy day to just kick back and enjoy this CD! Until then, I'm content with enjoying this CD regardless of the weather! John: I'm proud of you! Didn't think you could top Aidan now he (you) sings to me. Everyone: This is a must have in your collection!
