True or False? John Deere invented the first steel plow.
False! Others had made steel plows, but John Deere made the first one that successfully slipped through the rich, sticky prairie soil.

Prior to reading this book, to me, John Deere was just a tractor. It escaped me that the tractor was named after a real person. It has
always been a fixture in my life and my father-in-law had several he used on his farm. Not until my grandsons came along and were infatuated with the famous green and yellow tractor did it occur to me there might be some history behind it.
I purchased the book "John Deere" to read to the kids about the tractor. Much to my surprise I learned as much as they did and found myself just as interested! The book is written in a way that captures the interest of young and old alike and the story is accompanied with delightful full color pictures. The story of John Deere was captivating and was not just a history text book. The author made John Deere come to life and his adventures and misadventures allowed the reader to know he was a real person with the same weaknesses as others but also with the talent to overcome his adversities.
The children (four and six year olds) remained interested throughout the duration of the story. Not only did they learn about John Deere but they learned the lesson of persistence and hard work.
Overall, the auhor did a fine job of turning a history lesson into a captivating story.
