A forthcoming second volume will cover the years from 1960 onward. This is a book written by and for tractor buffs. The principal author, Don Macmillan, says his "love affair" with green machines began in 1940, when he was working on a farm in Gloucestershire, England, and encountered a brand-new "AR" tractor. Now it continues in this enthusiastic outpouring of facts, figures, photos, and anecdotes collected and savored over a 40-plus year association with the John Deere organization.

This story of "The Long Green Line" is told in two sections. The first traces lineage, where the machines were derived from, in five chapters of "company chronology." The second, a large pictorial section, shows developments in each category - tractors, combines, tillage equipment, etc. - with a collector's attention to detail throughout.

Thus the reader gets two slants, two ways of following what happened. The first part gives cross sections, reviewing the "state of the line" during successive periods of the company's life. The second part presents hundreds of photographs covering the development of tractors from the beginning, combines from the beginning, etc. Never before has the John Deere product line been covered so thoroughly.

This book deserves a place in the library of everyone interested in vintage farm equipment. It qualifies as "one you've been waiting for."
