John F. Kennedy (Scholastic I Am Series #9) [NOOK Book]

Overview

I was the 35th President of the United States. I am John F. Kennedy.

When I was young, people called me courageous and competitive. I used those qualities to serve as a commander in the U.S. Navy. Overview

I was the 35th President of the United States. I am John F. Kennedy.

When I was young, people called me courageous and competitive. I used those qualities to serve as a commander in the U.S. Navy. The leadership skills I learned in combat helped earn me a place first as a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives, and later as a U.S. senator-but that was just the beginning. I became another kind of commander, the commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces, when I was elected president. I was the youngest man to ever hold the office. and my youth affected the progressive decisions I made and the laws I passed. Though I accomplished a great deal in my short life, I was assassinated at the age of forty-six. Still, my brave choices changed the lives of generations to come. I am John F. Kennedy.
Featuring full-color illustrated covers, beautiful interior illustrations, a detailed timeline, introductions to other notable people from the story, and simple maps, this is more than your average biography.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
With a fictionalized introduction in first person by John F. Kennedy, this chapter book has a personal appeal. The rest of this non-fiction book is written in third person. The sepia pencil illustrations confer a pleasing allusion to the past—from the portraits of those important in the life of JFK and timeline to clips of his life. The former U.S. President, referred to as Jack, suffered physically and emotionally throughout his childhood and adult life, yet he overcame these great obstacles. Of interest especially to the young reader will be the relationship Jack had with his older brother, Joe, Jr. Instead of letting the shining star of the family discourage Jack from excelling, his favored brother propelled Jack further. The illnesses Jack overcame were chickenpox, whooping cough, German measles, mumps, chronic back pain resulting in surgery, and Addison's disease. John F. Kennedy is portrayed as a man who never gave up in spite of personal illnesses and difficulties in his career. His wedding to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, her significance in his life, and their children are warmly portrayed. Specific facts about his assassination are included. This is an excellent resource for young researchers, and one of eight Scholastic biographies. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
