Overview

This nifty little compilation may feature actor/comedian John Leguizamo's cartooned mug and words on the sleeve, but the jams are pure unadulterated Fania vintage gold. These tracks -- and a bunch more -- make up the soundtrack that accompanies Leguizamo's Ghetto Klown stage show; he handpicked a dozen for this set. There isn't anything rare or unreleased here, but together, these tracks make up one burning salsa playlist. Let's face it, the man has taste when it comes to jams: the album opens with the Fania All-Stars (circa 1974) laying out "Estrella de Fania," which is in turn followed by the Celia Cruz/Johnny Pacheco Cuba-Rican stomper "Químbara." While there isn't a dud in this batch, there are some more clear highlights: Orchestra Harlow's "La Cartera," Ray Barretto's "Acid," Willie Colón's "Aguanile," Héctor Lavoe's "Mi Gente," and La Lupe's "Puro Teatro." Given the price and remastered sound quality, ugly cover aside, listening to this baby is a killer way to spend an hour.
