Most people see Locke as the deep and serious thinker, sitting contemplatively at his desk, composing the four seminal works that would be spectacularly influential during the 18th century, articulating ideas that remain cornerstones of modern democracy. Cope (English and comparative literature, Louisiana State U.) however finds that he undertook less somber activities as well: holding patronage political appointments, working as a freelance medical doctor, kicking his heels in exile, floating through non-conforming counter cultures, restoring himself at health spas, and playing with scientific apparatus.
