Overview

Stefanidis' ability to instill luxury into simple surroundings has made him one of the most sought-after interior designers in the world. Nowhere is his attention to the details of comfort more apparent than in this new collection of houses and rooms designed for clients from around the world. Large and small, town and country, main homes or holiday residences, these houses exude atmosphere and individuality thanks to the use of light, color or fabric, by how furniture is placed and beautiful objects are arranged. His ideas combine to make each room stylish and unique. In a chapter entitled "Developing an Eye" Stefanidis discusses his approach to designing a house and its individual rooms, and how he makes use of light, balance, and structure. He reveals where he has found inspiration for his designs and the refinements that are his hallmark. There is also a special section with inspirational details from a number of different houses that covers bathrooms, hallways and stairs, upholstery, paint finishes, and pools. This book will delight and inspire anyone looking to "develop an eye" for design and create atmosphere and effect in individual rooms or throughout a house.

Author Biography: John Stefanidis opened his London-based interior design practice in Chelsea in 1967, and from there he undertakes commissions throughout the world. His previous books are the highly successful Living by Design and Rooms (Rizzoli).

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
One of the leaders in the decorating field, Stefanidis (Living By Design) has the ability to produce stunning yet livable homes, be it an apartment in London, a federal style house in Rhode Island or a countryside estate. He provides the reader with the essential ingredients, and guides them into expanding their imagination, suggesting what to put in and what to leave out; he is not afraid of experimentation. The book brings together many of the common elements he uses without undue repetition. To help readers understand the process and his underlying philosophies, Stefanidis commences with a short autobiography that explains the influences that go into his work. From there he follows on with "Developing an Eye" and the need to exercise it. Each residence is fully documented with text and more than 240 wonderful color photographs, fully captioned. Completing the volume is a section called "Details," about the finishing touches. This glossy coffee-table book is an ideal luxury gift and an essential volume for any interior designer's library. In each of these books, interior designers recount how their upbringing, education, and personal experiences have helped them develop their style. A London-based interior designer born in Egypt to Greek parents, Stefanidis has designed interiors throughout the world; here he describes his upbringing and the experiences that shaped his design philosophy. Color photographs depict a sampling of his commissions, accompanied by his reflections on the work. Wolf relates his experiences as a Cuban-born, New York-based designer. Wolf's own color photographs professionally depict his recent interior design work and illustrate his philosophy on the use of color, light, space, and texture. Both are recommended for academic, professional, and large interior design collections.
