Overview

Even today, 29 years after retiring from coaching basketball at UCLA, John Wooden remains America’s coach. John Wooden: An American Treasure is the definitive book on his extraordinary life, from his early years as a small-town legend from Martinsville, Indiana, and an All-American guard at Purdue to his legendary years at UCLA and the fruitful years following his retirement.

Here is the story of his relationship with his late wife, Nell: their love affair for the ages, his deep depression after her death in 1985, and how his faith and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren provided him with the reason to embrace life again.

The events that led to his decision to walk away from coaching at the pinnacle of success in 1975 are explained in detail, as well as the carefully planned words he used to tell his shocked players in the locker room that he would be retiring after the NCAA Finals game in San Diego. Here are the behind-the-scenes stories of how Wooden was offered the chance to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates, how he developed his famous Pyramid of Success, and the real secret behind why his UCLA teams were able to win more consistently than any other collegiate team ever. Here are up-close, personal moments that reveal what his life is now.

On the year of the 40th anniversary of his first national championship at UCLA, and more than 30 years after his autobiography, John Wooden: An American Treasure reveals why this kind, endearing, unbelievably intelligent coaching legend, even at age 94, remains one of the more fascinating, extraordinary, yet humble men of this, or any, generation. Ultimately he has become America’s Teacher as much as its most celebrated coach.

    Great reading

Steve Bisheff's book 'John Wooden: An American Treasure' is the best sports book I have ever read. Being a close friend of Coach Wooden's for many years I have tried to read everything in print on Coach and no one has done a better job of describing this extraordinary man's life.

Most complete and entertaining biography of John Wooden

As a long time observer of the Ucla basketball program,I thought I knew everything about John R.Wooden.But that was before I read Steve Bisheff`s new book John Wooden:An American Treasure. Written in a concise, yet complete manner, the book contains many hidden gems and anecdotes never revealed in any previous biography.I heartily recommend this book to all fans of American sports legends and not just to fans of college basketball.

    The Best on Wooden

I've read everything on John Wooden and this bio by Steve Bisheff of the OC Register is the best yet. It took me back to the early 60's when I first began to follow the Coach and the Bruins. It features players, assistant coaches and coaches who were Wooden's peers. Coach is not painted as perfect, but his character stands out above all else. What I like about Bisheff's book is that Wooden is seen through the eyes of everyone as more than a basketball coach--he's a teacher of life and impacted every young man who passed through his program. I highly reoommend this book especially to all Wooden/UCLA fans. This is a must read.

A must read for Wooden fans

As a long time reader of books by and about John Wooden, I can highly recommend this book. This gives you a much closer look at the man, as well as the UCLA program. With so many contributions from family members, former players, coaches, and reporters you gain a whole new appreciation of this great man. I could not stop reading once I started.
