Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this encore performance to The Many Adventures of Johnny Mutton, bright comic strip panels and speech bubbles convey Johnny's victory in a cooking contest; his role as host at a party; and his ability to woo local grocery store patrons by writing poems on their brown bags. Ages 6-10. (Apr.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Readers can follow the further adventures of Johnny Mutton, the hero of James Proimos's 2001 graphic chapter book, in Johnny Mutton, He's So Him! A lamb that was adopted in the earlier book, The Many Adventures of Johnny Mutton, by a woman who loves him unconditionally and fails to notice his wooly coat, Johnny wears shorts and T-shirts and attends the local elementary school. Humor is the natural result of Johnny's efforts to find his place in the human world. He throws a birthday party for his friend Gloria but dissuades the guests from attending by planning such activities as "bobbing for broccoli." He bakes cupcakes for a cooking contest but gives them away prior to the judging. He is fired from his job bagging groceries due to his creative packing methods, which include tossing eggs into a sack one at a time and breaking up a loaf of bread to make it fit. Yet through it all Johnny endears, and that is the charm of Proimos's book. Gloria assumes that Johnny planned the party for the two of them alone, which is what she wanted all along. The cupcakes brighten other people's day. Comical but sweet verses that Johnny printed on the grocery bags melt his boss's anger. Johnny Mutton has a generous heart. Proimos's comic-book illustrations are hip and bold. His show-and-tell format invites readers to scan the pages for humorous comments and details. All this and a mild dose of bathroom humor—what's not to like? 2003, Harcourt,

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-Six silly stories about a human-acting sheep, told in comic-book format. Topics include saving the Earth from a people-eating science project, a party with only one guest, and a staring contest won by a "toot." Colorful cartoon characters and lots of dialogue balloons illustrate the text, which appears handwritten and is all in capital letters. The format is busy, but emerging readers will love the slapstick humor and amusing art.-Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The mischievous but generous-hearted sheep raised as a boy, introduced in The Many Adventures of Johnny Mutton (2001), steps up for five more exploits, if that's the word. After a classroom daymare in which his Momma gets eaten by his science project, Johnny loses a cook-off by giving away all of his cupcakes to needy passersby, throws classmate Gloria Crust a party to which no one else comes, wins over local store owner Mrs. Torpolli by writing love poems on her bags ("One dozen eggs. Six boxes of Jell-O. I like you. I just had to tello"), and finally loses a staring contest with Momma by blinking when she "toots" loudly. Done in brightly colored comic-strip art that in style resembles Matt Groening's, and told almost entirely in dialogue balloons, these hip, nonviolent episodes will draw young fans of the slightly off-kilter. (Easy reader. 7-9)

Praise for The Many Adventures of Johnny Mutton:
"Silly? Yes! Funny? That, too. It's hard not to like a story in which the baby left on a human momma's doorstep is a sheep. . . . More Johnny, please."—Booklist
