Joia: Chill Out in Miami

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Piotr Orlov
Paris-based George V Records has found a raison d'ĂȘtre, and quite a bit of success, in lifestyle music mixes that touch on spirituality, pan-global sounds, lounge chic, and a chilled-beats flavor -- most famously with their Buddha Bar series. Alan Smithee's Joia: Chill Out in Miami mines the same landscape, relocating the hash-bar-for-the-beautiful-people atmosphere to a Florida hotspot while continuing Buddha Bar's mix of exoticism and crystal ambience. Located on South Beach's Ocean Drive, Joia is an immaculately sculpted restaurant/lounge that combines the tropical and modernist designs that are Miami's aesthetic trademark. Located on South Beach's Ocean Drive, Joia is an immaculately sculpted restaurant/lounge that combines the tropical and modernist designs that are Miami's aesthetic trademark. So, too, does this soundtrack, stirring equal parts Zero 7 plastic soul, Sade smoky adult sensuality, Gypsy Kings slight Latin spice, and Jazzanova worldwide jazz-house into a potent chiller. The resulting vibe is one of mellow self-consciousness, best exemplified by Tibet Project's "Serenity," which mixes Buddhist drones and new age chimes. Some lovely asides do snugly fit the mix -- check the classic string-laden, disco-soul of Leo's Sunshipp's "Give Me the Sunshine," which sounds like a precursor to modern lounge, or the Afro-Cuban trip-hop of Wicked Lestor's trumpet/steel drum groove "Chocolate." But mostly, Joia is a space for chilling out, a mood perfectly conveyed by tracks with names like "Bohemian Sunset" and "The Quest."
