Overview

Fifteen years ago, long before anyone else thought of tucking actual letters and notes inside a book, Little, Brown published The Jolly Postman by Allan and Janet Ahlberg. This wonderful book gave children a chance to read letters sent from one fairy tale or Mother Goose character to another. Among the funny notes was one from Jack, who lolled on a sun-drenched island, thanking the Giant for the gold that let him afford such a nifty vacation. All this amusing correspondence was deftly illustrated and the book attracted hordes of eager readers.

I found this book at a yard sale for $0.25. It's worth a million dollars. I just hope that parents have read the original fairy tales to their children, so that the children can appreciate the Jolly Christmas Postman.

I bought this great book as a Christmas present for a 4 year old boy. I had read the Jolly Postman before, but never the Christmas Postman. It's great! All the usual nursery rhyme/fairy tale characters are in it, with their letters to the North Pole and a special visit from Santa at the end. He loved that there were letters tucked away on each page and it was fun waiting to see what each one would be. The Humpty Dumpty letter was a big hit. It's a small jigsaw puzzle to put Humpty pack together again. We were so surprised when he put it together in no time at all! My only word of warning is this: it takes a LONG time to read. The story runs throughout the book, plus there are letters for each character to read as well. In fact, one of the letters is a small little paperback book. You have to leave a lot of time before bedtime to get it all done, unless you have a pretty agreeable kid that can put some stuff away and save it for the morning.

We bought the book for a niece or nephew for Christmas. My two teenage children and I loved reading through the book and opening all the special letters. A four-year old nephew ended up with the book and he wanted his parents to keep reading it over and over. It is truly enjoyable if you are familiar with all the old nursery rhymns and folktales. The details were wonderful.

Very creative book with colorful illustrations and characters that most children are already familiar with. Envelopes contain items (a mini-book, game board, postcard, puzzle, and more) that can be taken out and read or played with. This book is fun for all ages- even adults. Little ones enjoy the illustrations and taking things out of the envelopes and putting them back in. Older children begin to understand some of the humor written into the verses and on the items in the envelopes. We find something new everytime we read the book. Also, great for those learning how to write letters and address envelopes.

Brought as an Xmas present for my daughter, she loved the little envelopes on each page addressed to different fairy story characters. Book that can be kept for generations!

The perfect Christmas present for young children. My five-year-old daughter adores it and the two others in the series -- and what better book for Christmas time than one full of letters, just like home? There's plenty of humour, loads of familiar nursery-rhyme characters and the book-within-a-book format is a novelty my daughter never tires of. The illustrations are simple in style, yet detailed and funny and have a direct appeal to children that more elaborate drawings sometimes lack. We love it!

This book was very interesting for myself as well as my kids. We have had it for several years and still enjoy today, even my 13 year old boy. I have 3 kids and all of them could read it over and over. It is also very fun, lots to do with the book, and it keeps kids busy for a long time.

I first heard of this story when it was read to me in the 3rd grade. From reading it to my younger siblings, i have found it is an interst keeper, especially when they can pull out the letters out of the envelopes. I also liked how they tie in fairy tale characters, like, if i remember correctly, little red riding hood.
