Chapter One

Jonathan and his Dad were going to the grocery store one Saturday morning and they saw a building with a lot of dogs in the window. Jonathan asked, "Dad, why are all of those dogs in there?"

"That is where they take care of dogs that nobody wants," said his dad.

"Can we go in and see them?" Jonathan had always liked dogs and his mom and dad had talked about getting a dog for Jonathan and his brother Justin.

"I guess so, we have a few minutes" said his dad.

They went in and walked through the cages where the dogs were kept.

There were small dogs with long ears and short tails.

There were dogs with short ears and long tails.

There were medium sized dogs with spots.

There were some with long hair and some with short hair.

There were puppies, and dogs that looked like they were kind of old.

Some looked sad, and some wagged their tails, some barked, and some didn't. Some looked hungry and some were fat.

Jonathan and his dad walked down the aisles. Dad was with the little dogs. He thought a small dog would be nice. It would be easy to walk a small dog. A small dog wouldn't eat much. It wouldn't be hard to give a small dog a bath. Yes, a small dog would be best.

Just then Jonathan's dad heard him scream! "DAD!!"

Was something wrong? Was Jonathan OK?

He turned to see what was making Jonathan scream. Was he alright?

"What is it Jonathan?" Dad asked.

He took a few more steps and there he was. Jonathan was sitting next to a cage and inside that cage sat a dog with a name tag on the cage that read "Roscoe". Jonathan had always liked dogs like Roscoe. The dog was sitting there wagging his short tail and licking Jonathan's face through the cage. He was brown with a white patch on his chest. His paws were white too like he had on socks.

"Dad! Isn't he great?! Can I have him, PLEASE?"

"Well let's see", said Dad. He went and asked the man if he could let Jonathan walk the dog. The man brought a leash and let Jonathan take him out to the yard where dogs met with their new families.

Jonathan hugged the dog. And the dog licked his face. Jonathan smiled, and the dog wagged his tail.

Jonathan's dad saw that the two really liked each other. The dog was calm and didn't bark much.

"We'll take him home and see what Justin and mom

think," said Dad.

Jonathan was excited. HOORAY!!! Oh thanks Dad. Thank you so much!!"

Jonathan's Dad reminded him, "You know it will be your job to walk him, and feed him, and take care of him. He will need a collar, and a leash, and a dog house for the back yard."

"Yes Dad, I know. I will take care of him and walk him and feed him and everything!"

Recommend highly - good family story!

This is great. My son had been asking for a book and this is a perfect book to show him what having a canine friend is about! Good story.
