All Music Guide - Shawn M. Haney
Neil Diamond puts himself into the shoes of a character, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, writing and singing music compelling and rich in texture and melody, to fit the portrait perfectly in a movie under the same name. Recorded in 1973 for CBS under the pop
ock style genre, Diamond had much help in order to make this into reality. Commend Tom Catalano for the musical direction and Lee Holdridge for the splendid and compelling orchestra and string arrangements. A word of praise and thanks also goes out the hundred-plus musicians rallied to perform orchestral duties.

I've been listening to this CD for years

This music is as fresh today as it was when first written. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

    Timeless

The lyrics of the track "Be" speak to the timeless theme. The lyrics on this CD are sung by a singer/songwriter who is as timeless as any we have ever had, and the musical direction by Tom Catalano and orchestration by Lee Holdridge makes it all come together as a super outstanding vocal and instrumental listening experience. I saw the movie when it was first released, bought the vinyl record as soon as it became available, wore it out, and now have the CD. I consider it Neil Diamond at his overall, absolute best - words & music by Neil Diamond. I cannot think of anyone who could have performed as superbly as Neil Diamond, Tom Catalano and Lee Holdridge to produce a soundtrack that takes on new meanings with the passage of time. There is a 20 year old and a 6 year old in the household who, after a very quick explanation of the theme of the book by Bach, listened to the CD, lyrics and instrumentals, and uttered the same three words, "It is beautiful!" The 6 year old tears up when he hears Neil sing Be and Dear Father. Both of them want the book, so... it's back to Barnes & Noble (to answer the paternal, between-the-line-question, "No, they each want their own copy.") and the 6 year old wants his book and a CD autographed by, "Mr. Diamond." I have simpler wants and hopes. I want it to quit sleeting and hope it doesn't turn into another un-forcast KC ice storm so I can GET BACK to Barnes & Noble.

    Simply the Best

I received this cd as a gift and to be honest was not enthused...that is until I listened to it. It is absolutely wonderful...simply the best. When I want to relax, this is the cd I reach for. The music is beautiful, Neil is great, but then, he always is. I listen again and again and never tire of it...one of my all time fav's.
