In principle this book is 'only' a beginner's guide. But its heft is a good indicator that it can suffice for many developers who pick Joomla 2.5.

Perhaps the key chapter might be number 4, which explains who to put up a basic website in 1 hour. Of course, it presupposes that you've covered the earlier chapters on the basics on installing Joomla and in learning its interface. Chapter 4 then takes that as the starting point for a quick gin up. Via Joomla, it is a trifle to maintain a consistent look across the site's pages. All the while, it is easily possible to customise the logos and other aspects to make your website unique.

One characteristic of Joomla is the use of categories. Each is a container of a topic's content, instantiated as webpages. The consistent look is done via CSS stylesheets. It is well worth your time to make a detour before starting this book, to learn about CSS if you don't already know them. Chapter 4 adds to the realism by having article pages, with text and images. Sounds like what you want for your website?

Another chapter delves into higher level aspects. Notably if you have a lot of data, how to effectively group or organise your data. Do this first in a top down approach, before cranking out webpages with that data, and you have likely to have a better website in the final formulation. Note also that categories under Joomla can have subcategories recursively. Permitting a fine grained classification of your data.

The book's advice also extends to cautionary notes about not trying to do too much in the main menu. The latter is what most users of your website will often use. And new users will surely see and want to use this as part of their initial experience. Its importance is manifold, and you must resist the urge to put too many items into it. Clarity and a minimalist methodology are recommended. For one mistake made by many newbie website designers is to bung as much as possible into the top menu, or into the home page, for that matter. Take guidance from the book and ask yourself how much should users really need to experience on entry to your website.

This is a very useful book for everyone who likes it to start with Joomla! It is one of the first books for Joomla! 2.5.
As all the books of Packt Publishing, this book is easy to read. It starts with a good explanation of the way the book is setup. Every part of information is bundled in a block with theory, time for action, an explanation of what just happened, a pop quiz to test your own understanding and at least a Have a go – hero. There you find more specific information about what you have just learned.
The writer Eric Tiggeler is an author of many books about Joomla! and books on writing and communication. He is also writing documentation and tutorials for several computermagazines and Joomla!communitywebsites.
The subtitle says enough: “An easy to use step-by-step guide to creating perfect websites with the free Joomla! CMS”.
Even for someone without any knowledge of building websites, it is possible to start with this book and at the end of the book you have your own site up-and-running.
    There are twelve chapters in this book over 393 pages;

Chapter 1: Introduction: A New and Easy Way to Build Websites
Chapter 2: Installation: Getting Joomla Up and Running
Chapter 3: First Step: Getting to Know Joomla
Chapter 4: Web Building Basics: Creating a Site in an Hour
Chapter 5: Small Sites, Big Sites: Organizing your Content Effectively
Chapter 6: Creating Killer Content: Adding and Editing Articles
Chapter 7: Welcoming your Visitors: Creating Attractive Home Pages and Overview Pages
Chapter 8: Helping your Visitors Find What they Want: Managing Menus
Chapter 9: Opening up the Site: Enabling Users to Log in and Contribute
Chapter 10: Getting the Most out of your Site: Extending Joomla
Chapter 11: Creating an Attractive Design: Working with Templates
Chapter 12: Attracting Search Engine Traffic: Tips and Techniques

At the end, you will find the answers of the Pop Quiz and an appendix.
Joomla! is a very good CMS, but you will need some extensions to create options for your website wich are not in the core Joomla! package. Erc Tiggeler has written a lot of examples for extensions in the front-end and in the back-end of the Joomla!site. For all these examples there are URLs to the website of the developers written, so it must be easy to find these extensions.
When there is a time for action in the book, there are many screenshots to explain the theory.

The book is only available in English. The screenshots are created with the English Joomla!-release. But even if you are not using yhe English Joomla!, you can use this book as a perfect beginner’s guide.
