Overview

He is arguably the greatest basketball player ever. His endorsements mean millions to companies around the globe. And he has endured scrutiny by fans and media attention normally reserved for royalty, presidents, or Hollywood stars. Jordan provides more insight into the life of Michael Jordan than any previous book for one reason - Jordan himself.

Sportswriter Mitchell Krugel has spent his entire career covering the Chicago Bulls and over the years has developed a warm friendship with Michael. Jordan features interviews and conversations in Michael's own words, from his entrance into the NBA in 1984 through the 1993 season.

Together, Jordan and Krugel relate stories that every fan wants to hear. Read about Jordan's most memorable moments in the game; his relationship with his family and his life as a husband and father; his overwhelming need to feel challenged; his feelings about the other stars in the NBA; how he deals with the spotlight; the Michael Jordan Journal: a day-by-day look at the 1993 NBA playoffs; the Chicago White Sox and his dream of playing baseball; and many, many more personal stories. Not only does the reader hear from Jordan, but also from the top players and coaches in the league. The NBA's best discuss what it feels like to play against him, and the coaches reflect on coaching against him. Jordan explores the human side of Michael's world, and it will stand as the most thorough and illuminating tribute to his amazing career and complex personality for one reason only - the conversations with Jordan himself.

Exploring the human side of Michael's world, this book provides stories every fan wants to hear--Michael's most memorable moments, his family relationships, his feelings about others in the NBA, his dream of becoming a baseball player, and the reason why Michael returned to basketball. Includes an eight page action photo insert.

Denver Weekly News
Provides an intimate overview of Michael Jordan as a person and a professional.
Wes Lukowsky
To the tune of Kermit the Frog's lament, "It Ain't Easy Being Green," Michael Jordan croons, "It Ain't Easy Being Mike." The retired Chicago Bull great and current White Sox wannabe provides a brief introduction to each chapter of "Hammond Times" reporter Krugel's surprisingly candid and objective biography. Krugel carefully examines Jordan's legendary competitiveness, concluding that it is both the source of Michael's athletic greatness and a kind of personal curse. We see the effect of his competitive spirit both in his gambling fiascoes, on the one hand, and in his night-in, night-out mastery of professional basketball, which, as Krugel explains it, was made possible not only by natural talent, but also by Jordan's remarkable ability to create a small challenge for himself in each game, whether it was teaching a rookie opponent respect or disappointing the home fans when the Bulls were on the road. Krugel also explores the stifling nature of Jordan's celebrity, detailing the horrors of living in a fishbowl. Though Jordan's relationships with teammates were often tenuous, they, too, recognized the double-edged sword of being the world's most famous person: As one teammate put it, "They couldn't pay me enough to be Michael." A fine biography as well as a thoughtful look at the burdens of fame in the modern world.

A fascinating book about a fascinating man.

The biography Michael Jordan: The Man, His Words, His life. Is a brilliant take on Michael beyond his greatness on the court. A take on his life behind the scenes and how he coped with the pressure and paparazzi. When Michael was very young he was already being introduced to sports by his father. Michael fell in love with the games Basketball and Baseball. Seeing as how great Michael was through out his career you would of expected him to be as great as he was in the beginning as he was in the end. That wasn't necessarily the case. In Michael's sophomore year he was cut from the high school basketball team. Although this seem to be terrible it was a blessing in disguise. This made Michael work harder and become a lot better then he once was. He made the team the next year and that wasn't it he was also the star. The hard work paid off and he soon got a basketball scholarship to play at the University of North Carolina. Once he was there his game and work ethic didn't stop it continued to elevate. At The University of North Carolina Michael was the star as well and led his team to a National Championship victory his sophomore year. Michael was drafted into the NBA with the Third Pick in the draft by the Chicago Bulls. In the NBA Michael continued to extend his greatness. But with being great you still have tons of critics. When the experts said all Michael could do was dunk. He worked on his shot and became one of the best jump shooters in the NBA. When people said he couldn't defend he worked hard in practice and games and became the defensive player of the year. When the critics said he could never win a championship he worked his but off and won 6 of them in his career. Michael had incredible work ethic and drive to become the best there ever was to play the game of basketball. With being the best also comes a lot of attention, most of the time more attention than anybody would like. Michael had to deal with reporters always following him asking questions, and fans always bothering him for autographs through out the day. When Michael went with his family to Disney Land him and his family had to be rushed out the back after every ride to avoid contact with the crazy fans who were trying to see him. Michael had to deal with an extreme amount of attention and learn how deal with it with out going insane. Michael was an Incredible Basketball player but it didn't happen over night. He worked hard, proved everyone wrong, dealt with pressure and paparazzi to get to where he was; at the top of the hill as the greatest to play the game of basketball.
One of the main messages of the story is if you want something it isn't going to be handed to you, you have to reach out and take it. Michael wasn't just born a great basketball player, he had to work hard every day to become the greatest of all time. Another message is too not let what other people say get you down. Instead of letting the bad things critics said about Michael get him down, he used the words as fuel to drive to become better. A thing I liked about this book is that it is very motivational. This story has motivated me to work hard and to become better at what ever I plan on doing. Someone would like this book for it is very inspirational and could give them the spark or desire they need to accomplish a goal they have always wanted to achieve. This book is perfect for someone who is down and needs something to uplift their spirits.
